Problem with System File Checker tool

I've used System File Checker (sfc.exe) numerous times in the past to fix (or at least check) various problems with no problems and usually good results. However, yesterday two different computers I used it with needed their Windows (XP Professional) to be re-activated after it was done. The worst part is that none of the activation codes I used would work. I tried the code from the computer and the one from the Installation Disk I used to replace the system files.

I'm reformatting the computers now, but I'm a little leery to use sfc in the future now. Anybody got a clue as to what would cause this? Thanks.

Quick update: I got the activation codes to work. I think I mistyped a letter or two. But I'm still not sure what prompted the need for activation.

Apparently this might happen if the install disc you use for sfc is not of the same type as the original install.

Yeah. That's all I can figure, too. The thing is I know I've used that same disk on the same model computer before without this happening. Just found it strange that it happened twice in one day.

Thanks for the feedback, Jay.

Maybe it depends on what files it needs to replace.

To be on the safe side, in the future try to use the same type install disc (Edition, License Type, Service Pack level) as the type OS on the PC. For example, XP Home Retail SP2.
