RC1 is on MSDN as of yesterday, if anyone else is a subscriber.

Re: Windows 7 Discussion Thread

Yeah, I'm downloading the RC1 build and debating installing it at home to replace my Vista Ultimate install.

I put the x64 version on my 'Test" PC at work, so we'll see how it goes.

Re: Windows 7 Discussion Thread

So far so good. I installed the 32-bit version in a Pentium 4 3.06GHz w/HT. 4GB of RAM but only 3.25GB is useable. ATI Radeon Pro 9800. VelociRaptor drive. Performance is pretty good. No issues with Virtual CloneDrive, Maxthon. Definitely better than the beta version.

Anyone having trouble with their mouse cursor freezing? When this happens the touchpad on my laptop won''t work either. I have to force it off to unfreeze everything. I have Logitech VX Nano.

Has anyone tried streaming to an Xbox?
You are suppose to be able to stream audio and video, and it also converts formats on the fly, kinda like TVersity.

were you using it as a hyper visor and actually creating a virtual environment

or were you trying the new 'xp mode'?
i havent tested xp mode, but from what Ive read.. it sounds like the benefits of a virtual machine, without the extra layer

Re: Windows 7 Discussion Thread

My coworker was using XP Mode with some Server 2K3 tools and it seems to be fine and plenty fast, like it was any other app.

Re: Windows 7 Discussion Thread

btw.. I have been using the 32bit beta of win7 for awhile now at home.. no issues

running the 64bit version on my work machine, (T5400 with 2 x quad core procs, 8 gb ram, scsi perc card and 10k drives)... tried to do an 'upgrade' to win7 64bit and it would make it almost to the end and then blue screen..

it does a good job of rolling back to the previous OS.. so thats a big improvement on failed upgrades..

i guess ill have to wait till i have time to move my data and do a fresh install

and of course.. at home Ill have to either do a fresh upgrade to rc1, or deal with the work around on trying to upgrade the beta to rc1

Re: Windows 7 Discussion Thread

gotdamn

i installed the 32-bit version on my extra computer yesterday (already had xp pro on it; now it's dual-boot)

tried a couple of the *windows 7* anti-virus builds kaspersky and another one and i get blue screens with both

also tried my trusty goto avast and bluescreen also

the bluescreens occur after reboot

which one works the best with less problems?

i think Norton is the next on the list to try...

Re: Windows 7 Discussion Thread

Avast and AVG work here without issue, sounds like a hardware issue (Windows Vista/7 have different memory management than Windows XP, perhaps some bad RAM?)

Re: Windows 7 Discussion Thread

An interesting new feature of Windows 7 is the ability to install it to a VHD (Virtual Hard Drive) file. So if someone wants to dual boot their system with Win7 RC, but doesn't want to partition their drive, you can follow these instructions:
http://www.geekeleet.com/index.php/2...ws-7-on-a-vhd/

Another guide, with better screenshots:
http://blogs.msdn.com/knom/archive/2...guideline.aspx

Note that this isn't a virtualized Windows 7 install. Windows 7 has direct access to all hardware, and boots the same as if it was on its own partition. The VHD file stands in for the alternate partition.

yea.. since i kept getting a bluescreen when trying to upgrade my vista 64 machine to 7rc1 64. i went ahead today and formatted and installed fresh..
typically i prefer to install fresh, so no complaints

but prior to formatting.. i used vistas 'full system backup' option.. I noticed that it backed up my drives as VHD files... no option to do individual file restores using this form of backup, but it appears that i can now point to those files to boot into my old vista install, if i came up with something Im missing..

havent checked on whether i could install virtual pc and mount it a virtual machine... but i would almost assume so.. could probably convert it with vmware as well.

You can mount the VHDs as drives in Windows 7 in order to access any files. No booting necessary.
http://thelazyadmin.com/blogs/thelaz...r-2008-r2.aspx

Or, if you do want to boot Vista again, you can probably boot into the VHD by making a new entry in the BCD bootloader:
http://thelazyadmin.com/blogs/thelaz...r-2008-r2.aspx

EasyBCD 2.0 will include support for adding VHDs to the bootloader.

Re: Windows 7 Discussion Thread

yeah, maybe it is my hardware,

just strange that only antivirus installs cause a BSOD

i got regular old kingston 667 memory in there

will play with it later on

---

figured out the problem; something had went horribly wrong with the chipset drivers the 1st go round

i just reinstalled windows 7 and did the nvidia drivers autodetect and got the newest (ironically the drivers it downloaded doesnt match my actual chipset, but windows 7 seems to like them)

avast installed perfectly this time and no crashing or bluescreens

Re: Windows 7 Discussion Thread

I tried 7 after using Vista for a while and liked it. It was pretty quick and I liked how the folders were set out, with a main area that scans your video/music and picture folders and shows them in one place.

My RAM usage running idle also dropped 8% from 23% using 8GB of RAM

I'm planning on installing this on an old 80 GB drive and playing with it this weekend. We'll see how it goes.
