Question for IT people re: Gmail
Does it suck a lot of bandwidth to keep Gmail open while Im working?
What about if I use Gmails secure server at http://mail.google.com If management is complaining about personal email is this the reason?

The application is not the problem, usually with personal email it is all the attachments and fowards to hoards of addresses. People sending chain email, jokes, large and multiple photos etc.

Do you use firefox? If so, check out Gmail Notifier. It runs on your status bar and you can tell it how frequently to ping for new emails. No sense leaving it open if you have that.

You can also use Outlook Express or Thunderbird with Gmail, if your work lets you.

Cool I'll look into it
I get notifications from lots of web communities that I like to be aware of but usually these are text only and I just need to see the subject line.

the traffic of refreshing is minimal
thats not the problem it doesnt matter if there is 2 messages or 10k messages in your gmail account.. your traffic is just it refreshing the list as long as you arent opening alot of large attachments from your email

It does not suck a lot of bandwidth but if your company has a Internet usuage software program like WebSense your internet usuage goes up a lot, it is like your are surfing all of the day.
I have had to check out employees internet usuage statistics because of this very issue and report back to their supervisor.

thats why its confusing--I access the internet for 70% of my job (FTP, art files, stock photography, client information etc). Of course when you use the net that much, you feel free to browse dvdtalk etc. But the one thing the manager is griping about is personal email usage?? Not me specifically so perhaps a coworker is emailing something huge all the time.

and potentially sending confidential information without the company being able to track it

There are many serious reasons for companies to now allow personal email traffic. They are legit. |
