Sony DVDR GX300 problem...

I just bought the machine to make back up copies of my MST3K episodes.

Yet, when I recorded my first episode, there was a faint, almost Macrovision-like effect where the screen would periodically switch from light to dark. Not a strong switch, but enough to where it's noted.

Any clues on why this is happening?
