Please help and comment on new website layout.
I hope this isn't frowned upon, but I don't have a large number of people at my disposal that I can have check out my webpage design I am working on.
I'm trying to get my site to look more appealing and eventually uniform across all my pages. I've redesigned the main page using a CSS layout. I am not sure of the colors I chose for various parts and text, links, etc. If some of you wouldn't mind checking out and commenting on layout, color choices, I would greatly appreciate it. The big weather blob in the middle will be moved to another page, I just needed with more then a couple of lines to be there so my layout wasn't effected. I need to figure out how to do that so that if I didn't want more then a line or two of text in the middle area, that the layout wouldn't get messed up. And the background color of the quote area isn't the greatest choice, but it's hard trying to find colors that are compatible. Anyways, the link is Page to comment on. Thanks in advance.

Nice work. One thing that occurs in my mind the second I see your page is, those Times New Roman font makes your page very generic. Also the borders for the number of visitor, time and date is a little bit out of color. You might want to use a more subdued color for the border. And oh, it's quite hard to read the "Visitors", "Time", and other things if the background color is that dark.
That's all I got to say. |

Okay.. thanks for checking it out.
Changed the color of the quote background and the "Visitors" etc. What kind of font family would you think is less generic looking?

That's a lot better. Those smaller font on your page looked nice. I don't know if it's too small for everybody but its seems perfect for me.

I wouldn't necessarily call it "Today's Quote," since it changes when you refresh.

Thanks for the help so far.
I renamed it to Random Quote. It looks like I need to play around with the layout. It looks horrible on my laptop 800x600. On my main workstation it looks good. 1124x768.

Yeah, keep in mind that not everyone runs their browser maximized. A good practice is to optimize your page for 800 pixels wide and make your tables flexible so that they'll stretch wider if someone does view it in a wider window.
Also, you may want to take a look at the generated HTML (just go to your site and do a "view source"). Sometimes when you're troubleshooting the layout of your page, you'll need to look at the generated HTML and it'll help a lot of it's reasonably well formatted. It's a little bit of extra work to get your scripts to generate well formatted HTML, but it'll pay off down the road when you edit/maintain your site. Finally, the page doesn't appear to render correctly in Mozilla (and presumably all other Gecko based browsers like Netscape). A lot of web designers seem to think it's only important to support IE, but IMO, that's a pretty lazy attitude. |
