For anyone using desktop search you need to check this out if your drives are NTFS:
Everything Search Engine - it's lightweight and incredibly fast.

And the IMO best video player:
KMPlayer

Its great for me when I have my laptop running next to my desktop.

It's called Synergy

http://synergy2.sourceforge.net/

ive been using synergy for a couple months now.. and it definitly is one of the coolest opensource apps ive used.. it impresses the hell out of everyone i show it to.

in the past, Ive always relied on KVM switchboxes.. but you end up spending all your time on one of the machines and rarely going to the other.
I admin both windows and unix machines at work.. i normally have both windows and x86 solaris machines at work.. i work primarily off the windows box, even when dealing with my unix servers, even though its much easier to work on unix machines from my x86 solaris box..
the problem is that its a pain in the ass to switch back and forth all the time.. so instead i got use to using putty and xwindows..

but now that Ive switched to using synergy.. sooo much better

i have synergy hosted on my x86 solaris machine.. and run the client on my windows laptop.. 2 flatscreen monitors , bluetooth keyboard and mouse..
and its awesome that the 2 screens sit next to each other, both running from seperate machines..

it amazes my IT buddies when they see me drag the mouse off the edge of my solaris desktop and it jumps over to my windows box..
then they really think its cool to see me copy text from the windows box and paste it into a terminal window up and running on the solaris screen.

Re: Share with us some cool freewares (totally free only)

Synergy looks awesome. i know it's not listed, but any idea if it works with Vista?

I've used Stardock's Multiplicity before, but that had a price tag. Would love to install Synergy to go between my home and work computers (laptop next to desktop), but my home PC is running Vista.

Re: Share with us some cool freewares (totally free only)

Uazu.net has a brainwave entrainment program called sbagen that is open source and can even be used professionally. I have used it for years and love it. I probably would never have learned to meditate without it. You can use if for inducing sleep, and any number of brainwave states. It's simple, but not obvious for people who aren't too geeky. I tend to open a sample with notepad instead of sbagen and edit what's already
in there to suit the numbers I want. It has a readme file to tell you what brainwave states do what. Love it.

I found this on another forum...
Active Hard Disk Monitor. It constantly monitors your harddrives for errors and heat issues.

Songbird - Yes it's still developing, but it's coming along fast. It natively handles FLAC and OGG and WMA too(on windows).

VirtualDub - This is way useful for making animated GIF's, all sorts of video editing and stuff.

The Gimp - I love this program, it's all I use for photo editing, editing animated GIFs, etc.

Re: Share with us some cool freewares (totally free only)

I am in search of a freeware directory printer that will give me the filename, size of file, resolution and duration of a folder. Karens directory printer doesn't do the resoultion and duration. I am wanting to export to txt file then import to Excel. Is there a Windows XP command to do this action?

Thanks!

There are some video files that I have and I need to know what each resolution (800x600 etc..) and duration (length of video file). I can get Windows Explorer to show those 2 additonal details but I need a freeware program to export it to notepad or Excel.

Just Tried Treeprt but it doesn't print those options in the report.
Thanks for the suggestion!

Re: Share with us some cool freewares (totally free only)

I've just started using LastPass. It's like Roboform with a few key differences. First, it's primary function is password management, although it does have form fill features too. It has some great pwd management and syncing features that I haven't found elsewhere, which make it very easy to use.

There is some risk in letting a 3rd party control my pwds, even if they only keep an encrypted copy, but this company seems to be doing it right. IMO, the software makes it much easier to use unique, highly secure passwords on the various sites I use and compared to what I normally do it's more secure overall.

A online pasword manager sounds crazy to me. I personally would recommend KeePass which can be run from a usb drive.

I'll plug the Adobe Reader alternative Foxit Reader. With the newest version you get thumbnail view and integration into Firefox (which is what I was waiting for). And at 3.5Meg it is 1/10 the size of Adobe.

John’s Background Switcher - Best wallpaper changer I ever ran across.
http://www.johnsadventures.com/softw...roundswitcher/

Works with multiple monitors. Has a bunch of different mods. Can work with your files, directory, different web sites.

anyone know of something similar to StatBar that's updated for modern OSes and memory levels?
it doesn't work too well with more than 2GB of ram

I use Speccy for very detailed information about my system. It's lightweight and free.

Then for ongoing graphs, I use the Windows Gadgets Wired Network Meter and All CPU Meter. Both are free at the Windows Gadgets Gallery (assuming you're using Vista or 7).

Re: Share with us some cool freewares (totally free only)

Given that AVG is not going to be free anymore after December, are there anymore good free antivirus programs out there? For now, I've installed AntiVir, which I've always heard good things about, but just curious to know if anything new has come out lately.

Re: Share with us some cool freewares (totally free only)

I kept getting a message saying that it wouldn't be supported and it wouldn't be free anymore after December. I guess they were talking about an older version that I must have been using, although I've been using it for years and can't remember ever getting a message like that before for an upgrade.
