Can't delete Earthlink -- "Windows system folder required to run properly."...WHY?

I just want to delete the stupid thing. I've found that all my Favorites are coming from my Earthlink folder and not my Documents and Settings folder, so I want it out. I never use it anymore.

Did an uninstall, but there's still some stuff left. How could Earthlink be a system folder of Windows, required to have Windows run properly? Can I change this??

it may have modified your winsock or something to that extent. i'd call earthlink and have them walk you through uninstalling it.

it may be as simple as killing the processes (available in task manager when you do a ctrl-alt-del) and/or services (available when you right click on my computer and choose 'manage') for the files and then removing the directory...but i don't know for sure.

cranky.

I assume this links into why all of my Favorites in IE are located under my Earthlink folder. This makes no sense to me. It's completely ignoring my User Account favorites. It's driving me nuts trying to figure out why.

Use regcleaner. Can you go into the favorites folder, cut the earthlink links and paste it anywhere out of the windows folder?

I'm still trying to get the damn flash animation of our old ISP out of IE on my sister's computer. You know that Microsft Flag and spinning glode? My ISP put some stupid Dstar thing there.

Fix Favorites and IE Icon

To fix the Favorites, either try uninstalling the EarthLink software or you will need to make some edits to your registry as the OS's default location for Favorites has been most likely changed:

http://windows.about.com/library/tips/bltip046.htm

To fix the icon your ISP puts in your copy of IE, it's another registry edit:

http://www.winguides.com/registry/display.php/83/

You'll want to follow the section on "Reset to the Default Logos"

Just be careful with your registry and make sure you back it up. Screw something up here and you screw your whole computer up
