Fry's BYO systems
I want to up grade my Pentium 266 that I built in 1998. I could spend 2000 on a new computer but I'd rather spend 500 a year & upgrade every year rather than be stuck with the same comp for 4 years.
I see Fry's advertise BYO systems I was wondering if anyone has ever purchased one of these. I have a good monitor & a hard drive. If I by one of these systems what else will I need to upgrage or that it does not include. The one out of todays paper is a: 1.2 ghz Athalon VIA KLE Chipset with Socket A Interface 2DIMMS slots for upto 1GB of PC-133 memory Built in 2d/3d video w/1900x1200 MAX resolution 2PCS: 1ISA: 1 AMR slots 3D sound with wavetable 10/100mbbs fast ethernet c ard udma/100 hard drive controler my other options is just to be everything seperate & build from scatch. in todays fry's ad I could get a 1.7 GHZ pentium 4 for $279 Any suggestion? Thanks in advance

Never buy systems from Fry's. If you get anything other than a product IN THE BOX, with the ORIGINAL shrinkwrapping, you'll get screwed.

before buying any cheap BYO system from Fry's find out who makes the motherbaord and see if it is a good company. then look at the parts you get. for example does it come with a case. how good is the power supply- for an AMD system the power supply is important. it must be on AMD approved list or pass on it.
Frankly I would pick out quality parts from a company like newegg.com who at least sells good products at good prices. You might pay an extra hundred bucks but get a more stable and better computer. Fry's sells defective customer returns too often to buy anything that is not sealed. a cpu or memory from them would scare me.
