I'm trying to enable DMA for both drives (CD-RW and DVD drive) on one IDE controller, but it only stays enabled for the Master drive. Is this supposed to happen, or am I doing something wrong?

Generally that is what is supposed to happen. I recommend enabling DMA (make it the master) for the DVD drive.
