Sony now including "clean versions" with some titles

Just noticed this today; going to sleep so don't have much time to discuss but the gist of it is that there are now 24 Sony titles that have the TV or airline cuts available in the 'extras' section, labeled as "clean version". I have a number of these titles via UV already and can now access the clean versions at no extra cost. Those who want these versions will have to buy the uncut version to get them; they aren't available separately. While I don't condone editing movies, these will be fun to have as extras- I already checked out the "this man has no dick" line in Ghostbusters and they replaced it with "This man is some kind of rodent." I noticed the replaced dialogue was in the front left and right channels, while the original dialogue was in the center making it easier to spot the changes. Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon is dubbed in English rather than subtitled as the uncut version is.

Just thought I'd pass this along, some people are already outraged about it but as long as they aren't forcing you to watch the censored versions I'm not too bothered by it. Would like to watch the TV cut of Scarface if they ever get that!

Strangely, I was just thinking today about how I think my kids would like The Jerk but the R-rated version has too much language in it. Was wondering how to see the old TV version dialogue. They used to shoot movies with two takes for stuff like this. Caddyshack, Ghostbusters, etc.

Is there a list of movies that have been affected?

Were the Spider-Man's really all that dirty? I mean honestly...if you had to pick a superhero movie for the kids to watch, that's about as clean as it gets (maybe the earlier Fantastic Fours were "cleaner" but that's about it). And isn't Goosebumps for kids? I get some of these, but confused by others I guess. The method is fine though, just don't change it.

Actually, I think it's pretty cool. They're giving you an alternate version for free.

Personally, I have no use for these particular titles. The kids are fine with PG/PG-13 movies. But it might be useful if they offer some clean Rated-R movies. And I wouldn't mind watching the clean version of Snakes On A Plane.

yeah, this would have been useful when my kids were under 10 or so. I remember renting Bicentennial Man (Robin Williams) which was a PG kids movie, but there is a scene (this is from memory, it was a while ago) where they were teaching him (the robot) swear words like sh*t, not something I wanted my then 4 and 6 year olds to hear.

Re: Sony now including "clean versions" with some titles

Remembering when I wasn't old enough to see R-rated movies without my parents' approval, I would still rather not see them at all than see a cut version. The one time I made an exception was when CBS showed Fast Times at Ridgemont High, which my parents would never let me rent but they'd let me watch it cut for TV. I later saw the uncut version and it was a different movie.

I would never see a sanitized version of a movie I like. I mean I'm not big on cursing, but censoring is just a no in my book. Which is why I'll never see a movie on regular cable...

So...I'm starting to wonder if I'm the only kid in here who was seeing R rated movies like Alien, Rambo, or even Exorcist by the time he was 10. I think I turned out okay...

Re: Sony now including "clean versions" with some titles

And just as soon as they were given, they were taken away- Sony has backpedaled on the whole "clean versions" thing after some of the directors objected, and these versions are now GONE. I had a few of them on my Vudu Watchlist since I was just checking out parts of them, now I can't access them anymore. Score another one for digital.

Note that I DON'T advocate cutting/censoring movies, but it was kind of fun to have these versions available and now they've been pulled. It seems Sony didn't do their homework on this beforehand, even though the directors did approve the cut versions to be produced for TV or airlines, they still had to approve their being available for streaming.

Re: Sony now including "clean versions" with some titles

According to Vudu reps:

"For those who purchased a title that offered the clean version during the time clean versions were available, we have re-deposited the clean version of that title back into your account. It will show up as it's own title under My Movies, not under Vudu Extras."

I've converted most of my collection to digital. A couple thousand movies. And I've never run into this problem. I've never lost a title that I've bought. And the only time they changed a movie, was to fix a problem. Switching a cropped version to the correct OAR. Fixing an audio glitch. Improving the video transfer. Stuff like that.

Still a long term concern that I hope will be proven not a concern.

But the thing is, even if the initial version they gave you was wrong, what if you LIKED that version? Case in point, one of the first UV codes I got with a disc was for the last Harry Potter movie- in 1.78 when it should have been 2.35. I never had time to compare the framing, but they've now switched it to the 2.35 transfer so that's a moot point now anyways. What if the only reason I redeemed the code though was to get the alternate framing? Why couldn't they have just kept BOTH versions?

And if you've never lost a title you've bought, then I guess you never bought any porn on Vudu when they had that, which was then taken off-line when Wal-Mart bought the company. But I guess that doesn't count, because it's porn.

Personally, I just care about watching the movie. I was upset that the Harry Potter release was incorrectly cropped, and I was glad when they fixed it.

I wasn't using Vudu back when it offered porn, so I don't know all the details. But I do know that everyone got a full refund. Seems like a unique situation that's unlikely to repeat itself. And everyone got their money back, so it doesn't seem like much of a loss.

But it's the same as someone coming in here and taking DVDs off my shelves and leaving money for them- I haven't "lost" anything if we're just talking monetary value, but I have lost access to the material on the discs because someone else decided it wasn't good. This made me uneasy right away about buying anything on Vudu, but since this was before they were available on so many devices nobody seems to remember that happening (I had the very first TV with internet apps, a Vizio. The only way to get Vudu before that was to buy one of their boxes.)

This clean version thing showed a bit of a positive aspect of "owning" a movie digitally as they had ADDED those versions to my library without taking away the uncut versions or charging me anything else, but now they've ended up revoking them. Bottom line is they may say I "own" these movies but I'm not the one in control of them, they are.

Re: Sony now including "clean versions" with some titles

One issue I found with digital copies is if you travel to another country, they prevent you from streaming content that you own. I'm guessing that downloading beforehand would work, but I haven't tried. I had a similar issue with digital games on my PSP when I was travelling and didn't have wifi, it wouldnt let me play the game I wanted since it couldn't verify my licence or something, literally preventing me from using the device exactly how I enjoy it.
