YouTube paid subscription service [update: will change to free / ad-based]

http://www.deadline.com/2013/05/yout...n-plan-report/

Google‘s paid YouTube subscription plans have been speculated over for months but could be officially announced as soon as this week, according to FT. Reports of the move first surfaced in January. Implementation has been projected to begin mid-year and could cost users $1.99-$5 per month with about 45% of subscription revenue going to YouTube.

No details yet or what kind of content will be offered.

I don't know. I think it's getting to the point where there are too many "paid" subscription streaming services.

I will stick with Netflix, Hulu Plus and Amazon Prime. I don't need to add anything else.

Once YouTube becomes a paid service, Google will almost have to acquire some exclusive content for it. Streaming is going to quickly become a thousand channels where you will need dozens of different services for a wide swath of mainstream content.

re: YouTube paid subscription service [update: will change to free / ad-based]

This won't be competing with Netflix/Amazon/Hulu. It's for premium user-created content. They'll be letting the most popular channels offer a subscription. So I imagine it's stuff like live concerts on Vevo, sporting events on ESPN, and shows on CollegeHumor.

YouTube Launching Paid Subscriptions to Some Video Channels

YouTube is set to launch a paid subscription model for its specialist video channels as early as this week, according to a report.

The move, which has been in development for months, aims to help channels finance a wider range of content such as television shows and films, and will serve as another source of revenue, according to the Financial Times.

The service will include up to 50 YouTube channels, and subscriptions to each channel will start as low a $1.99 per month, the newspaper reported Sunday, citing anonymous sources.

In response to the report, a YouTube spokesperson told Mashable, "We have nothing to announce at this time, but we're looking into creating a subscription platform that could bring even more great content to YouTube for our users to enjoy and provide our creators with another vehicle to generate revenue from their content, beyond the rental and ad-supported models we offer."

Rumors that YouTube will monetize its premium content have circulated for some time. In January, AdAge reported that the site asked a small group of channels to apply to be among those paid.

At the time, a YouTube representative told Mashable, "We have long maintained that different content requires different types of payment models ... The important thing is that, regardless of the model, our creators succeed on the platform. There are a lot of our content creators that think they would benefit from subscriptions, so we’re looking at that."

Other signs suggest that YouTube is likely working on à la carte and pay-per-view options for its video channels. Code found in a February app update mentioned subscribing and unsubscribing from paid YouTube channels.

Hmm...I subscribe and watch a lot of channels, but I won't pay a dime for any of them, I'd just stop watching.

$5 is too much for these streaming services, us Americans are glued to our money, unless it comes with a cheeseburger.

For me the problem is time. Some of this content is interesting, but if I'm paying for it I have to be using it. Netflix, OTA channels and my Blu-rays take up the majority of my time. That was the reason I dropped cable. I was paying for something I rarely used.

re: YouTube paid subscription service [update: will change to free / ad-based]

I tried a 14 day free trial of TNA Wrestling and the biggest problem with the Youtube paid service is getting it to your TV. No Roku app. Tried the Youtube app on my PS3 and Sony BD player. BD player would not show any of the videos. PS3 would only show a few of them. Tried selecting them on my tablet that I have linked to the PS3, but the PS3 then say the videos were not available to be played. Alright, tried the app on my Sharp TV. I could easily select and play them here, but you can't fast forward. You fast forward and it just stops playing and never reconnects. Tried just letting them play, but 15-20 minutes in the video would just stop and never reconnect. Last resort was the WiiU. The interface for finding a video is terrible, but it would access them all and play them. However, I had the same problem of being anywhere from 20 to 40 minutes in and the video would just stop playing and never reconnect.

Basically this is the worst app for viewing videos possible. They can't even design it to remember your place if you have to reconnect. I have a pretty fast internet connection and no issues with Netflix or Hulu Plus. I can live with the Youtube app for watching free short clips, but if they are going to charge money they have to redesign the TV apps.

re: YouTube paid subscription service [update: will change to free / ad-based]

Looks like YouTube's subscription service is coming soon.

I wouldn't mind paying a few bucks for ad-free. I watch a lot of YouTube on my Roku, and the forced commercials can be annoying. The ones you can skip after 5 seconds aren't too bad. I've run into some forced ads that last 90 seconds.

But I'm not paying $10/month. I have no interest in their music service.

YouTube Is Prepping Its Subscription Launch: Two Services, One Price

Google’s video site appears to be finalizing launch plans for its long-in-the-making subscription service, and industry sources say they’ve been told to expect a launch near the end of October.

A blast email from YouTube to content owners, telling them they have to agree to new terms by Oct. 22 or their “videos will no longer be available for public display or monetization in the United States,” helps support that timeline.

But YouTube, which floated the idea of a new subscription service nearly a year ago, has never publicly committed to a timeline. Last spring, YouTube executives were telling content owners they were aiming for a mid-summer launch. It’s possible the launch could keep slipping, even beyond 2015.

Note that we’re referring to a single service, not multiple ones. Sources say that’s because YouTube intends to bundle two different services into one offering: An update of its music service, which it launched in beta as YouTube Music Key last fall, and another service, yet to launch, that will give users the ability to watch anything on YouTube without seeing ads.

Video industry sources say Google has told them it intends to charge $10 a month for the combined offering. It’s hard to imagine how YouTube will make money at that pricing, since its music service was supposed to cost $10 on its own, with the music labels and other copyright owners pocketing the majority of that.

I got that notice for my older YouTube account (which I stopped using because it got 2 copyright strikes, and one more might get it booted completely)- I don't even remember the password or email address I used to sign into it, so the stuff there will likely be gone when that happens. I'll get around to re-doing them on my current account eventually but there's stuff people will miss in the meantime. Just more proof that just because it's on YouTube, doesn't mean you can see it forever.

There is software that can download YouTube videos for off-line viewing. You don't have to lose those videos.

I've downloaded a few other people's videos of stuff I was happy to have at all regardless of quality, such as the 1977 commercial breaks from a Charlie Brown special. Most people just think if it's on there, they'll be able to see it whenever they want.

So you're using yourself as the example that nothing stays on YouTube forever when you're knowingly posting content that someone else holds the copyright for? That's some brilliant logic right there.

As for YouTube itself, I tolerate it because of its convenience. I would not pay a cent for it.

This thread is a few years old, but it's worth bumping because YouTube Red is changing.

Will now be known as YouTube Premium. New pricing structure as well:

Google Play Music will now be known as YouTube Premium Music.

FYI for those who subscribed solely for Cobra Kai and aren't regular subscribers. You will pay $2 more next year when season 2 is released.

Current subscribers will be grandfathered in at the old rate ($9.99/mo).

I don't know why they don't offer a standalone plan for just Youtube. Forcing people to buy Youtube/Google Music is stupid.

I just signed up for YouTube Red last night to watch Cobra Kai. After I finish the series, I see zero reason to maintain my membership.

Weird timing, coming off YouTube Red's highest profile release by far. You'd think they'd do this rebranding before they put out Cobra Kai. (Maybe not the price hike, though.)

I've done a couple of Google Play Music trials in the past and liked the service. Bundling it with YouTube Red was a very nice bonus, if only for ad-free YouTube. But I really like my Spotify and paying for two music services was redundant. If they offer another free/$1 trial with the relaunch I'll probably check it out again. I've got a ton of credit via Google Rewards surveys.

Looks like I got in just before the price increase and my rate is staying the same. I think Google/YouTube charge a bit much as is personally compared with other streaming services, but I also watch a lot more YouTube to justify the cost for myself.

We dropped DirectTV Now a few months ago for YouTube TV (when it was still $35 a month) and we have access to YouTube Red, as well. Cobra Kai is awesome, and I am very interested in their upcoming show, Impulse, from Doug Liman.

There's just not enough original content to justify the price. Signed up for free to watch Cobra Kai, then promptly cancelled. Will have no problem paying $15 a year just to watch that show, but they're going to need a lot more to make me a permanent subscriber.

Interesting that YouTube is changing their philosophy on the premium content.

I wonder how soon they plan to instigate this? Will it be done in time for the 2nd season of Cobra Kai?

I guess they will still have the no-commercials thing, but leave this as an option as well if the ads don't bother you. Better to make money from the clicks and Ad money than to only rely on the subscribers which I can't imagine are that many.
