Re: Netflix - News & Discussion
Netflix is going to raise prices for new customers, and come to US cable DVRs
Our latest update on how Netflix is doing is here, and buried within the earnings details the company revealed two announcements that have been a long time coming: it's raising prices for new customers, and it is (after years of rumors) going to offer service on cable-provided DVRs in the US soon. The price hike later this quarter will be for new members only and is expected to be a "one or two dollar" increase, while current subscribers will be grandfathered in at their current rates "for a generous time period." The big question for Netflix? Now at 48 million customers strong (37.5 million in the US), can it push through a price hike without the customer losses it experienced the last time it changed pricing? In January it increased prices in Ireland by one euro per month and grandfathered current customers in at their existing price for two years, and says it saw "limited impact" as a result. Netflix executives will take investor's questions live on YouTube in just a few minutes, watch here or check after the break for any interesting details.
As far as a Netflix app on cable boxes, the bad news is that initially it's not going to be on the boxes most of you likely have, but it will start with providers that use TiVo DVRs (Suddenlink and RCN for example, which both already have deals with Netflix and TiVo) and "try" to extend beyond after that. That's similar to how it's rolled out on European services so far, but the US could be tricky. Among the reasons why is Netflix's battle with ISPs over how to deal with the bandwidth it's streams are taking up.

I think Netflix was expecting some kind of backlash toward that.
Turns out most of us were expecting it and are OK with it "within reason"

It was inevitable Netflix would have to raise prices. All the money they are spending for programming has to come from somewhere. I can't imagine at $8 per subscriber they are actually making money. Especially with their costs continuing to rise.

I would like to see them get more aggressive with getting and retaining content. They really need to distinguish themselves from Amazon (I've venture 80-90% of their catalog is shared). They also need to make it easier for us to browse the catalog and really find what we're looking for. And they need to allow us to queue titles that aren't available yet, so when they do show up they pop right to the top of the list.
Hopefully the new money goes to all of that and more.

Even though they don't have nearly as good of a selection as I think they should for streaming, it's a ridiculous bargain considering how little I pay for it each month. If they made a lot more available to stream, I'd fork over more money without hesitation.

Re: Netflix - News & Discussion
95% of the time, when I hear someone having problems streaming something, they're using a Blu-ray player or Smart TV. I've never had any luck getting that stuff to work on my Panasonic TV or Sony BD Player. Even if some of your apps are working, others might be outdated. These are usually just tacked on features that aren't well supported.
I'd suggest trying a dedicated streaming device. You can get a refurbed Roku for $35. The latest models are $50-$95 new. I have no doubt you'll have a much better experience using Netflix/Amazon/Vudu/YouTube on that device.

I don't know, but some funky stuff is going on with some series in my queue as well. I've been going through "30 Rock" and "Parks and Recreation", and overnight more than half the seasons of those shows just disappeared.
Hopefully just a temporary glitch. Because crap like this (unexpected yankings of a show I'm in the middle of watching) really sour me towards subscribing to streaming services.

Yeah, they tried longer, it resulted in protests.

Nice of them to keep the same price for 2 more years. It means I won't change back to a disc-including plan, but I rarely watched the discs anyway, and got really annoyed not being able to watch new releases after the studios started implementing the 30-60 day window.

I have had one episode watched on one device and then when I turn on my other devices it syncs up and will play the next episode. It remembers where you last were on cross devices if that's what you were wondering?

Netflix is shutting down it's public API support for 3rd party apps. They'll continue to work with a few select developers.

Here's the list of approved applications which will continue to receive support:
Instant Watcher
Fanhattan

NextGuide
Flixster

Re: Netflix - News & Discussion
I have tried every setting on my BD player and PS3 plus the settings on Netflix but every time I try to stream something the first 4 or 5 minutes start out in 280p and then it slowly works its way up to 1080. Is this normal or is AT&T just fucking with me?

Re: Netflix - News & Discussion
My ISP isn't one of the ones with a publicized beef with Netflix. Typically, streams start off low-res but work their way up to 1080 in a few seconds. Though I noticed things weren't as smooth when I brought my PS3 when visiting my parents (who have Time Warner). It took a lot longer to ramp up to 1080, and even then the picture quality would keep oscillating from HD to SD (and back again). Maybe it was just a bad time. But it made Netflix pretty much unwatchable for me (though my parents didn't even notice the image quality changes).

My Panasonic BD player is the same way, but on my Roku3 it plays much better. Oddly, the Roku is wireless, but the BD is hardwired to the 'net.
