General Streaming Thread (Netflix, Amazon, Redbox...)

Streaming is growing, so I figured I'd create a general thread for discussion. I normally use Netflix via the PS3 for most streaming options, but I've been using Amazon a bit more lately. They do have a few titles that Netflix doesn't have, such as The Goonies and some other WB titles. I'm sure there are others. I hope this year is when the PS3 gets HBO Go. That is pretty much the last remaining app that I would need. I've used Vudu for new releases a few times and their service seems to be improving.

However, Redbox just announced a new beta program that is testing out their new streaming service, backed by Verizon. It's called "Redbox Instant". The major roll out will be Q1 of this year, but you can get on a waiting list right now and receive a special code to get access.

Per engadget:

As promised, the Redbox Instant beta is under way, offering interested customers and employees an early peek at its blend of kiosk rentals and streaming video. With unlimited subscription video and four Blu-ray rentals per month available for just $9 we expect there to be significant interest, if you haven't already signed up for early access on the website we suggest you do so promptly. The service's apps are already available on iTunes and Google Play, although you'll need one of the access codes being doled out to activate them. Hit the source link to get on the list, until then go over the official details and wonder just what might be waiting.
The early results is the content is small, but that was the case with the others. I've also read there's an option for streaming only at $6 per month with no disc rentals. For $8 per month, you have the same as the bold deal, except it's DVD only.

Re: General Streaming Thread (Netflix, Amazon, Redbox...)

I've signed up for the Redbox beta, and now I play the waiting game. What exactly do they have to stream? Is it the same new releases you can get from the actual box, or is it the same old catalog titles that all the streaming services seem to have?

It's probably mostly catalog just like the other services. They supposedly have agreements with the following: Epix, Paramount, Lionsgate, and MGM.

Amazons streaming flatout sucks.

I've tried it on my Blu-ray player(s) and TV, and both can't manage to get to the "HD" setting or not constantly freeze or stop (and when it stops, it can't remember where it was last). In contrast, Netflix has never been an issue for me on any of those devices.

Amazon's interface got an upgrade on the PS3 a few months back. It's still a little clunky compared to Netflix, but I've yet to have a buffer issue on the PS3.

Well if streaming is growing, surely the number of people using the thread will grow too, right?

I had no absolutely no idea this place even had a streaming section. I pretty much only use the HD, Movie and Sports. The thread police can have it towed if they wish. But it takes months to get a thread title change, so maybe this baby will be parked here for awhile.

It's a fantasy like the supposed "book" and "politics" forums.

Tek War, the old William Shatner and Greg Evigan science fiction series, was just added to Hulu Plus.

Re: General Streaming Thread (Netflix, Amazon, Redbox...)

I found this site, which seems to work quite well:
http://www.canistream.it/
You search for a title, and it'll tell you all the ways you can watch it.

The only thing it doesn't seem to do is allow you to search all regions of Netflix. I'd love to be able to see if a title is available in Sweden, but not America.

It would also be nice if that site included HBO, Starz, Encore, and Showtime streaming services.

Re: General Streaming Thread (Netflix, Amazon, Redbox...)

Time Warner and Netflix have reached a new agreement on more content.

Users will be able to stream complete seasons of several series produced by Warner Bros., including NBC's "Revolution" and USA Network's "Political Animals," according to a statement issued by Time Warner on Monday.
The complete roster of additions includes A&E's "Longmire," ABC's "666 Park Avenue" and the forthcoming "The Following." "Chuck," "Fringe" and "The West Wing" are also included.
Unfortunately, Universal has just signed an exclusive 10 year agreement with HBO.

That's a LONG contract in this day & age.
HBO's gotta have something big planned (ie: HBO GO for non-cable subscribers) for 2013. Otherwise, that 10-year agreement makes no damn sense.

they have extended the agreement that they have already and it is only for the pay tv window, it does not mean universal movies will not bee seen anywhere else

Re: General Streaming Thread (Netflix, Amazon, Redbox...)

Here's a portion from one of the news articles:

Universal inked a deal with HBO on Monday that gives HBO exclusive rights to all Universal films for another decade. This is an extension of a previous exclusive agreement and means, essentially, that rival services like Starz and Netflix won't be getting ahold of Universal's movies anytime soon.

Re: General Streaming Thread (Netflix, Amazon, Redbox...)

Wasn't really sure where to put this, but does anyone know why Birthright pt 2 (Star Trek TNG) is missing from Amazon?

I'm finally going through that series and rudely found that out last night.

The Treks aren't on Netflix anymore right?

Based on the reviews at Amazon, it's been unavailable since at least Sept 2012.

Maybe you can get an answer in the Amazon Instant Video Forum:

http://www.amazon.com/forum/amazon video on demand/

You can watch the episode on Hulu Plus. They have a free trial.

Ah, thanks guys. My buddy said the got rid of TNG at Netflix, going to be signing up again soon for AD so I can probably wait. Already burned my Hulu + trial.

Re: General Streaming Thread (Netflix, Amazon, Redbox...)

Your buddy does not know what he is talking about. If you have Netflix it really is not difficult to know if something is streaming or not so why he would tell you it is gone makes no sense
