Re: The Roku Thread

So is this officially using HDMI 2.0?

Re: The Roku Thread

The tech specs don't list what version of HDMI they're using, but they list that they can do 4K at 60 FPS, which AFAIK requires HDMI 2.0.

Personally I think this is the most fully featured of all the new set top boxes. Amazon Fire can do 4K, but only at 30 FPS and doesn't have HDMI 2.0. The new Apple TV has Siri and apps but doesn't do 4K at all (which isn't a big deal to me since I don't have a 4K TV and likely won't for many years), but also can't handle HVEC for video, which to me is a deal breaker because HVEC is going to be the new standard and benefits 1080p/720p video just as much as 4K.

I notice the Roku 4 also natively handles MKV, which I don't believe the Apple TV does. Not sure about the Amazon Fire.

What material has even been released at a higher than 24 FPS framerate?

It's just future proofing, and good for my GoPro footage (which is only 2.7k60 but nice to be able to have it at full res).

Re: The Roku Thread

Most 30fps material (like shot-on-video TV sitcoms) is shown at a lower framerate on streaming services. It would be great if they could finally get that right, especially on YouTube.

So 30 FPS was the framerate or video? How'd that work? I thought 24 FPS movies and TV shows used pulldown for the fields?

Re: The Roku Thread

Easiest thing is if your Roku has any sort of TV news channel, either national network or a local station anywhere. Watch any live newscast over the air on your TV (on the actual TV station over the air, not on the Roku) and then AFTER THAT watch any news on the Roku- if you can't see the difference, I don't know what to say.

Re: The Roku Thread

is anyone able to get 5.1 sound for HBO Now on the Roku 3? do you have to switch the audio tracks or something?

edit - i just recieved confirmation that 5.1 does not work on the Roku. this is their response over Facebook:

I do apologize about that sir. Our team is working with Adobe on a fix for the Dolby 5.1 surround sound issue you are experiencing. We want everyone to have a great HBO NOW experience and will make sure to keep you posted with any new developments. Thank you for your patience. ^Frank

IndieFlix is offering a 1-Month Free Trial with no credit card needed. Offer expires on Oct 15th.

They have a lot of movies that aren't available on other services. Video quality ranges from decent to awful. I ran into a few movies with poor encodes (a 2.35:1 video squeezed into 1.85:1 so everything looked tall and skinny).

Looks like the After Dark titles aren't available for Roku.

Re: The Roku Thread

Anyone have any problems with the NBC app? I was trying to watch the latest episode of Blindspot, and all was fine until the second commercial break. Show returns, and video is fine, but no audio whatsoever. Anyone else experience something like that?

Re: The Roku Thread

We've experienced the issue... Also with Blondspot... I think it was the 2nd episode.... We were able to get it to work in a weird way... We let it play a minute or two after the commercial break... And then we backed it up and the audio came on...

Weird. I tried that and got nothing. I even tried restarting the episode. Sound was there right up until it came back from that commercial break, then nothing.

Re: The Roku Thread

I've had a weird issue with NBC shows not loading on Hulu. Both Heroes and SNL had episodes that would start to load then just kick me back to the show's menu. Luckily, both are available on the NBC app and that has worked just fine for me so far.

Episode 6. Weird that it seems to have happened on the same show on two different episodes.

Re: The Roku Thread

How funny, I bought the Roku 4 and was setting it all up and we used Blindspot as our first test. Same audio/video sync issue with it. Didn't occur the whole time, but for about 5 minutes off and on, it happened.

Speaking of, I was attempting to go streaming only by cutting out my cable. But when it was all said and done, I calculated the streaming services, but getting Amazon, Hulu, Netflix, and Rolu with Sling, it came out to within $40 of my current bill. So cable stays - for now...I did use the higher subscription rates though, but I like the content on my 4K TV, so I guess that's why it's higher and closer to by cable bill.

Anyone try the new Hotel/Dorm connection feature on the new OS? I'm going to be traveling next week and was thinking of bringing the Roku along.

Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles (Season 1 & 2)
The O.C. (Season 1-4)
Pushing Daisies (Season 1 & 2)
Vixen (New D.C. animated series)
The Ben Stiller Show
Hellcats
Who's Line is it Anyway? (11 seasons)

I know there's a few Soccer fans here. NGSN just released a Roku channel. They have a 1-Month Free Trial.

Many thanks!

Hopefully it is more consistent than their web app. Many times matches simply didn't work. I will say however that NGSN has been quite responsive to the issues.
