Re: The OFFICIAL Noteworthy New Arrivals to Netflix Thread
Just went to check the pilot and was shocked to see it's in 16 x 9, not 4 x 3. I've never seen it this way.
Hope someone will check it out and see if it's possible that they opened up the earlier seasons or if they just zoomed in to fill up the screens. It's definitely not stretched.
The credits were in 4 x 3 and it really does look like they opened it up. If it is, they did it just for Netflix because they've been showing this on ABC family and none of the early seasons were ever shown in 16 x 9.
It's like a whole new experience watching it this way.
PS- definite crop on top and bottom but it really looks good this way. I know it's a sin to go against OAR but I really like this for Netflix.

Re: The OFFICIAL Noteworthy New Arrivals to Netflix Thread
Still, I'm curious though.
If the 4:3 image is just a square in the middle of the larger 16 x 9 picture and if they simply opened up the sides for the 1st time, wouldn't there be equal image gain on both sides? If you look at Luke's diner in the background in the two images, there is a lot of new information to the right but very little to the left. Also, doesn't it appear Rory is "closer" in the 16 x 9 framing? Wouldn't that be from zooming and not just opening the sides?
Again, I'm only asking because I'm curious. I think it looks magnificent this way and would have bought all 7 seasons on BD if they had ever been made. But as much as some people hate it, unless they really mess things up, I really like whatever slight alterations they made to allow the earlier seasons to be 16 x 9.

There's more to it than just that, 4:3 taken from a 16:9 source is referred to as Pan&Scan because they pan and scan around the image to make sure you're seeing what they want you to see. So there could be equal image on both sides, or there could be more on one side, or hell there may only be one side -- all depends on the scene. But if what's important is the main character, then she will usually be center of the screen in 4:3, but that may not be true for 16:9. This isn't the case for Gilmore Girls, I don't think, because it appears to be fully framed for 4:3 and not 16:9.
They likely shot the show using open matte 35mm, which is a a slightly taller, slightly wider film than what you see, so data exists on the top, bottom, left and right of what is shown in both 4:3 and 16:9. They went back and decided what was most important to show, the top of her head apparently didn't make the cut. This is not the same butchering as The Simpsons on FXX.
To note, while nice, there is no evidence that this show was intended to be shown in 16:9, so what you see on the sides may or may not be "intended" by the director. Generally you'll have a lot of unnecessary stuff that just makes the framing look a little awkward.

For any Trekkies out there who haven't seen it (and there likely aren't many), Galaxy Quest just went up. It's a wonderfully witty but affection satire of sci-fi fan culture with a warm heart in the right place and some hilarious banter from the cast. Sadly, the reimagined Battlestar Galactica apparently went down . I was going to watch that next, but oh well, I guess such is the way of things.

BG left Netflix before and came back. The series is too popular to stay off Netflix for long. I was in the middle of season 3 when it got pulled so I feel your pain
