Price Match -- B&M Stores: Tips, Policies, General Information

Going through the Bargain threads, there are constant references made to 'price-matching' at various B&M stores, along with comments about some places being easier than others when trying it.

I have a confession to make: I have never price matched! (It feels good to get that off my chest)

Anyway, I searched and couldn't find a thread like this. I'm curious on a few things. How does one do a price match? Is it just simply taking a competitor's ad into a store? Where's the best places to go for success? Any other tips that might be helpful?

The only stores that I know of that price match are Best Buy, Circuit City, and Wal-Mart. In my experience, I've brought the original ad in to the store. Usually, I'll present the ad to the cashier as I am making the purchase at the register. They'll proceed to change the price. Depending on how much the price variance is, they may need a manager to approve the match. I've never had issues at the Best Buy stores. I can't think of a single occassion where they have denied a price match. The only one slight almost-problem I had was when I brought only the page with the DVD prices, not the whole ad and the cashier said they *HAD* to find the dates the prices were valid. Luckily, there ended up being a small effective dates note on the other side. The only time I've price matched at CC, they actually called the store to see that the item was in stock. Luckily it was. I have yet to try and price match at Wal-Mart. I have been hesitant because I tried once to have them match their online pricing, which they DON'T. BB and CC do, so it was surprising to me that WM didn't. Plus, I have Reward Zone at BB, so it works out best to buy everything from them so I can earn the points.

I PM at Wal-Mart all the time since it's literally 2 minutes from where I work. Take in the ENTIRE original ad with you, gather your items and then go to the electronics counter and before they start to ring, say that some of the items you have are cheaper in the ads you have with you. They will verify the ads and the dates and if the price adjustment is more than 50% of the item or greater than the store's price adjustment threshold, the cashier will need to call a CSM or Manager to override with a key flick. They'll total you up and you'll be on your way.
