Deep DIscount DVD....how?

I am just curious how this company can sell dvds for such low prices. I am definitely interested in purchasing from them, is it a valid/legit website?

Yes, it is legit. I have ordered from them 10 times. Check out the "Store forum" for discussions on them. They can have slow shipping with free shipping, although Ive never had much of a problem.

Absolutely legit, it's probably DVDTalker's favorite e-tailer. Their free shipping is really slow though, much slower than Amazon's free shipping. Worth the trade off, though.

I've been buying from them for several years now. They are indeed legit. Bear in mind their web site sucks and when you get free shipping, you are recieving what you pay for....deliveries can sometimes take as much as 2 to 3 weeks to get to you but I've yet to have a problem that wasn't resolved quickly and to my satisfaction. Also bear in mind DDD and DVD Planet are owned by the same company and one will sometimes beat the other's prices. I'd also check out DVD Pacific, excellent pricing and they have been shipping my pre-orders out really early.

My only online site for DVD's. ..and they occasionally have a 20% off sale. The site will be extremely slow during the sale! Expect shipping 2-3 days for order processing. And 1-3 weeks from the time the order ships to arrive using the "Free Shipping". They package well. I personally never had a real problem with their Customer Service.

If you are patient, then I would recommend to buying from them. It is good to make a DVD wish list for those potential sales

I have ordered probably $5000 off of them. They are based out of Itasca, IL (subburb of Chicago).

Their pricing is pretty good for older releases and box sets. Their pricing for new releases is still pretty much in line with Amazon. Sometimes Amazon is cheaper, other times, DDD is cheaper. But usually it's within a buck.

I live in Illinois, so I get charged sales tax on my purchases, but with the trade-off with the Free Shipping, I come out about even. I can get stuff from them in as little as two days, or sometimes it takes the full 10 business days. Never know why that happens. (Well, like others have mentioned here, the free shipping option may take a while for them, but because I live in the same state, I can usually get my stuff within the same time line or less as the more expensive shipping options, if you know what I mean.)

I do my DVD shopping like this...I first check Amazon for title availability and specs, reviews as such. I then take note of price. Then I check DDD to see if they have it and for what price. (Sometimes DDD doesn't have everything, but most of the times, they do.) Then I will order from which ever is cheaper, or if I want to place an order on an existing title, but to ship it with a pre-order, I'll order it from Amazon. DDD doesn't do that. They'll ship "immediately" if the title is in stock. So if you plan your purchases like that, beware of DDD's lack of holding shipments with other orders.

1. No physical presence.
2. They focus on one thing and do it well (well, two things: DeepDiscountCD.com).
3. Relatively low on-hand inventory.
4. DVDs (and CDs) don't take up much inventory space.
5. Probably not a lot of staff.

I, too, have placed many orders with them, and will continue. I've been a regular customer for 3 years, and in that time, only one problem: a Stargate season set didn't arrive for 3 weeks. I began emailing them at 2 weeks since I'd received an email 3 days after placing the order stating it had shipped. After about 3-4 emails each met with automated replies, I finally called 'em. They immediately shipped another copy (upgraded shipping) and it arrived within 2 days. This most certainly seemed like a postal service issue (I imagine it's under some rural mail carrier's car seat), but DDD came through.

My primary on-line source for DVDs.

A note about the free shipping: this is sent USPS Media Mail, and any "complaint" I have about the slowness is directed NOT at DeepDiscount, but at our mail service. I use Media Mail for sending out items I sell on eBay so I can verify that getting something mailed in a timely manner (which usually happens with DDD) does not guarantee that it will reach its destination in a timely manner.

In answer to the original question, I think it has mostly to do with mark-up over cost. I answered a similar question in one of the CH threads a long time ago. I used to work at CH, and basically, large companies like this buy in bulk. The more they buy, the lower price they pay per disc. CH pays, on the average, about 2-3 dollars per disc (more for box sets). I'm sure DDD does pretty much the same thing, and by offering a lower mark-up price, they attract more customers. Pretty basic sales concept.

The Itasca, IL address also covers Collectors Choice Music, Critic's Choice Video, and the Spice Network catalog.

Another long-time customer here. Never a poor transaction. They are my ONLY on-line shopping option. I wouldn't even consider anyone else (unless they misprice on occasion).

I also use DDD pretty exclusively. The only time I ever go elsewhere is when I'm ordering non-R1's, or Criterions (dvdplanet usually has the better price). And of course, for misprices.

Great store. Slow shipping, but what do you expect for free (or a flat rate of $4.95 for us Canadians). The periodic 20% off sales are unbeatable.

I've placed about 25-30 orders with them in the past 4 years and have had two problems out of all of those times. When I had a problem they went out of their way to make it right and did not disappoint.

I have placed about 125 or so orders with them (about 300 DVDs), and never had a single problem. They are my #1 place for purchasing, second is DVDPL, and third is Costco. During their 20% sale, I will easily spend 1K

Erm.. doesn't DVD Planet have the cheapest prices (especially for Criterions with a 35% discount). Though DDD.com is good, DVD Planet is the best concerning prices.
