When did Geek become a good thing to be called?
I've noticed Best Buy has this new thing of their employees being a part of the "Geek Squad". Now when did being a geek stop being a negative term? Maybe I'm getting old but being called a geek was an insult. Will walking up to a girl in a bar and proclaiming yourself a geek going to increase your chances of having a relationship with her? I wouldn't think so.
Do Best Buy employees actually enjoy being called 'geeks' officially? I know if I worked for BB, I'd quit before being a part of the Geek Squad. Best Buy might as well call it the Nerd Patrol. As far as I'm concerend Geek Squad means the same thing.

Yeah the definition of geek has changed over the past few years. It used to refer to guys with pocket protectors and calculators on their belt who were socially inept. Now it has more of neutral meaning referring to the average person who is technology oriented.

Personally,
I've come to reguard "nerd" as not negative anymore. I just generally use "nerd" as someone who is very into something (and not really in a negative way). It's possible to be a "sports nerd"
Geek (IMO) still has that negative connotation and no amount of conditioning on the part of Best Buy is going to erase that.

The concept of "nerd" and "geek" are two totally different things, though they are not mutually exclusive.
Both groups have taken the word back, much in the same way that the homosexual community 'took back' the slur "queer."
Be a geek or a nerd, and be proud of it!

My fiance and I consider ourselves geeks, although maybe it's more in a dork sense. We both love music, film, literature, art museums. We have serious discussions on diverse topics all the time. We call each other geek all the time.
In fact, she recently bought us matching Geek hoodie sweatshirts.

Heck I still don't think being called a geek is a good thing. When I saw this at Best Buy I could not help stop laughing. I would not to work there and be know as the Geek Squad. Not to mention they have to work those stupid shirts with tie.

Heh, the sweatshirts are hilarious. The GEEK logo looks like a GAP logo.
They're from thinkgeek.com

The "matching sweatshirts" part is what kills it.
Just the image of two people wearing matching sweatshirts EVERYWHERE they go...just doesnt seem right.
Granted, you guys probably don't wear them at the same time and every day but...
The "GAP" logo parody doesnt help much either...
