Re: 2017 MLB Week 5 May 1-7

Mariners sent Dan Vogelbach back down to AAA. They brought him up because Valencia wasn't hitting, but he didn't hit either. I still think he can succeed with his combo of power and batting eye, but it hasn't happened yet.

Zunino still hasn't figured it out. They started him at AAA last year, and he had some not-horrible numbers after he came back up, but this year: .174/.250/.246 with zero homers, five walks, and 28 Ks in 69 AB.

Zunino is never going to figure it out. He's a classic AAAA player. Too good for the Minors but struggles against MLB pitching.

I would strongly question the Mariners' development program. Tons of their top prospects never develop, some highly regarded by everyone. Their coaching staff must be terrible.

Yes, when nearly all of your prospects fail when they're generally regarded highly in scouting circles (Ackley was the consensus top prospect after Strasburg), it can't all be bad luck. The fingers point directly at your development. I'd like to think DiPoto will be better than JackZ in that area.

Re: 2017 MLB Week 5 May 1-7

Nice win, O's. Miley gets knocked out off 2 consecutive line drives in the 1st. Hope he's okay because he's been great so far. Some guy I've never heard of -- Gabriel Ynoa -- steps in relief and fires off 6 shutout innings.

O's win, but the shakiness of O'Day and Brach continues. They both looked awful. Still no sign of Britton.

And JJ Hardy mirrors the problems of O'Day and Brach. Any ball to him -- either hit or to turn a DP -- he can't get it cleanly. And he can't hit for crap now.

The O's are a baffling team to me now. I'll take what they've accomplished and I know to most outsiders, they've been smoke and mirrors for the last 6 years, but this year so far is unlike previous years. They aren't mashing the ball, they don't have a great bullpen, they don't have defense, but somehow have gone 18-10.

The Mariners must've been reading this thread. They sent Zunino to Tacoma yesterday.

I don't know why they don't leave Jimenez in the bullpen(let him pitch 3 or 4 innings twice a week) and replace him with Tillman in the rotation.

Re: 2017 MLB Week 5 May 1-7

According to CBSSports.com last night Gabriel Ynoa of Baltimore was the first relief pitcher since 1996 to pitch 100 pitches of scoreless relief. Note that Randy Johnson(pitching in a suspended game) pitched 7 plus scoreless innings of relief picking up after Curt Schilling started and the game that was suspended.

The Orioles play Buckball. I think most consider Showalter one of the best managers in the game. It's forgotten he was a big reason behind the Yankees' dynasty in the 1990s.

If the Orioles get even one decent starting pitcher, I expect them to win the East.

No doubt. But there was a method to the Buckball madness in previous years -- homers, defense, bullpen. It's not really there. I love Buckball and have crowed about it in this forum for 5 years, but this has been Buckball to absurdity. They're winning but his standard bullpen moves are shaky.

The Dodgers' rookie Cody Bellinger hit a Grand Slam tonight, his third HR in the past two days and he's had 5 HR, 15 RBI since getting called up 11 games ago. If management had plans to send him back down after guys come off the DL, they'd better start re-thinking those plans.

He's going into the outfield. Bellinger is a strong candidate to win rookie of the year.

His dad is Clay Bellinger, third-rate MLB pitcher.

Re: 2017 MLB Week 5 May 1-7

My dad said everytime he turns the TV on the Mets are playing the Braves.

Doesn't MLB want 4 team divisions (like the NFL) so we can watch the Angels play the A's 30 times a year?

I would like too see less divisional play(in all sports).

Maybe one reason NFL has TV rating problems(I'm not sure on the breakdown on divisional match-ups).

All I know is Minor League baseball is the same(possibly because of travel cost's). Just watched Durham play Norfolk(won't be the first time or last time this season).

Minor league travel costs are a legit concern when the Pacific Coast League has teams from Iowa, Memphis, and New Orleans.

I guess Gonazlez going to the DL helps prolong this for a little while. I know it's early, but a future of Seager and Bellinger looks damn bright though.

The Dodgers are going to be contenders for the next decade. Kershaw likely stays with the team his entire career. It would shock me if Seager doesn't win a couple of MVPs in that span.
