And THANKS NCAA for not only screwing Wichita State with a freaking TEN seed, but for also screwing Dayton by making them open against an angry Wichita State. Lol.

Re: College Hoops Postseason 2017 (NCAAs, NIT, etc.)

Local news broke this yesterday morning.... the reason (3) Indiana is playing at (6) Georgia Tech in the NIT Opening round isn't because Assembly Hall was unavailable (as previously reported). It's because the IU Athletic Department was worried that they wouldn't be able to put enough butts in seats due to it being Spring Break right now, and that showing a sparsely-attended post-season game on TV might hurt recruiting during the off-season.

A lot of local folks are understandably upset, since most of them/us can't score tickets during the season, and would easily jump at the chance of seeing a game in March, NIT or no NIT. But worst of all, what does it say to the players? That their school would rather them play on the road than embarrass them here at home?

BR picked up on this and has added their own perspective:
http://www.crimsonquarry.com/2017/3/...k-georgia-tech

Added: Of the 16 campuses who would be hosting first round games, 11 of them are on Spring Break this week: Alabama, Colorado State, Houston, Illinois State, Indiana, Iowa, Monmouth, Syracuse, TCU, UCF and Utah. The other 10 didn't have a problem opening their arena so their kids could play.

I heard an interview with Coach Calipari and he said something interesting (perhaps for the first time ever ). He said, referring to that Shocker team, that underseeding a team doesn't really hurt that team, it hurts the other teams in their region. I had never thought about it like that, but he's probably right.

Exactly. It was exactly flipped a few years when the 1-seed Shockers drew UK in the 2nd round. UK was underseeded then.

ESPN's 25 experts picked the National Champ. Six different teams were picked at least 3 times:

UNC - 4
Nova - 4
Gonzaga - 4
Duke - 4
Kansas - 3
Zona - 3
UCLA - 1
Michigan - 1
UK - 1

NCAA Tournament 2017: Wichita State and Dayton being paired in the first round is a tragedy
The selection committee should apologize to every American for this awful decision

by Austin Brown Mar 12, 2017, 4:55pm PDT
SB*Nation - Mid-Major Madness

Two of the top mid-major teams in the country, Wichita State and Dayton, will be forced to cannibalize each other in the first round after the NCAA Tournament selection committee made one of the worst decisions in it’s history.

Wichita State and Dayton finished #2 and #4 respectively in our final Mid-Major Madness Power Rankings, and they both appeared to be more than capable of making a deep run in the tournament this year. Both teams won the regular season titles in two of the top-ten leagues in the country. Now, thanks to the committee, only one of them will survive past Friday.

According to Kenpom, Wichita State is the eighth best team in the country. According to the selection committee, they’re a 10 seed. The Shockers went 30-4 in the regular season, and three of their losses came against NCAA Tournament teams. They won 21 of their final 22 games, but apparently that was not enough to put them above teams like 15-loss Vanderbilt in the eyes of the committee. The fact that the Shockers are a #10 seed is downright laughable.

But if there is one man in America with more of a right to be pissed off at the committee than Wichita State's Gregg Marshall, it’s Archie Miller. His Dayton Flyers earned a 7 seed for the second year in a row, and for the second year in a row his team got a brutal first round matchup. Last year, Dayton was routed by a 10-seed Syracuse team that eventually made it all the way to the 2016 Final Four. Their first-round opponent this year appears capable of doing the same.

The worst part of this matchup is that it means that at least one of these mid-major programs won’t have the chance to show what they can do against power-conference teams. Is a team that went 17-1 in the Missouri Valley Conference better than a team that went 10-8 in the SEC or the Big East? Thanks to the committee, we may not get to find out.

I don’t know who the winner of Friday’s game in Bankers Life Fieldhouse will be, but I already know who the losers are. It’s all of us. Every single college basketball fan loses thanks to this abominable decision by the selection committee.

I just had to see who voted for Michigan. It was Dan Dakich, whose son is a redshirt senior on the team.

I have Michigan losing in the Final Four. It's a bit homery sure but they have been playing really good basketball for a while now and I think Beilein's teams are built for the tournament. When teams aren't allowed to put their hands on us all game we are very difficult to stop and our defense has been steadily improving for a while.

If I were Louisville fans I'd be just as pissed about Michigan being a 7 seed as UK fans are about Wichita State getting a 10.

I have Michigan in the E8, losing to ISU. That's my trainwreck region.

Sure. I also bet on Over 1.5 1-seeds to make the F4, so believe me, I'm rooting for you. Cash rules over non-cash games. Nobody I know runs cash pools anymore.

Self...go long or go home early.

Finally chiming back in. The 97 Kansas team would crush this years version by 20 points easily. They played defense. That was the one of the best teams I've ever watched. Kansas didn't deserve the title in 08 and certainly didn't in 88 but that 97 team was awesome. Certainly deserved it that year. They might win it all this year but I think that's just cause of parity.

David Worlock @DavidWorlock

The 2017 #FirstFour concludes with the lowest total scoring margin in its 7-year history. The 4 games were decided by a total of 16 points.

Looks like both of the early upset bids will fall short. Virginia is so tough, milking the shot clock and then scoring just as it expires.

I'm pulling hard for your Bison, RD.

I never understood why my fellow Jayhawk fans root for other Big XII teams in the tourney. I hate Huggy Bear and would love to see his guys flame out in the opening game for a second year in a row.
