Re: 2017 NCAA College Basketball Off-Season and Coaching Carousel Thread

Congratulations to Kansas Coach Bill Self, who is among the group of 2017 inductees into the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame! The full list of inductees will be announced at Noon ET today.
Self is the third consecutive Kansas coach to be inducted, after Roy Williams and Larry Brown, but the first to be enshrined while still coaching at Kansas.

Edit : Self, T-Mac, George McGinnis, Rebecca Lobo and Jerry Krauss among the inductees. C-Webb doesn't make the cut.

Re: 2017 NCAA College Basketball Off-Season and Coaching Carousel Thread

Frank Mason III wins the Naismith Player of the Year award and the NABC Player of the Year award, making him Kansas' first-ever Consensus National Player of the Year (he'd already won the AP award, Sporting News and the Oscar Robertson Award). He could sweep the major awards if he wins the Wooden Award on Friday.
Apparently the Rupp Award isn't being given this year (or last year).

Don't love the Ewing hire. But maybe it will help on the recruiting end.

Why not? He's been an NBA Assistant for the last 15 years. He's more than paid his dues to be given a head coaching opportunity.

But he obviously got a little favorable treatment by the school getting interviewed and pretty much hired on the spot as of today.

I'm skeptical as well. No college coaching experience. He better get some top notch assistants.

College is a different beast. NBA guys don't want to spend their summers in gyms at AAU tournaments or kissing a 16 year olds ass.

None of the kids he will be recruiting was alive when he was an elite NBA player.

http://thecomeback.com/ncaa/showtime...s-resigns.html

Former Baylor coach Dave Bliss resigns as head coach of Southwestern Christian University following the Showtime documentary that aired last week.

Don't know how many here have Showtime, but a new documentary aired this past Friday called "Disgraced" about the murder of Patrick Dennehy and the cover up.

I watched it and it really made Bliss look bad. If you have Showtime, watch it. Very compelling.

Yeah, I don't think Xs and Os and game coaching will be an issue. It's all the other crap. A college head coach is basically everything: CEO, GM, Coach, Guardian, etc.

Ohio grad transfer Jaaron Simmons to Michigan. Was an All-MAC First teamer who averaged 16 ppg and 6.5 apg for the Bobcats. That fills a very big hole in next years roster.

Surprised to see fired Washington Husky coach Lorenzo Romar land at Arizona as an assistant, but good for him. He certainly has recruited well in recent years, so maybe that will be his focus.

Nice to see Mark Smith (the 2017 Mr. Illinois Basketball) resist the lure of Izzo and stay home to play at Illinois.

Somehow I missed the fact that Wichita State left the Missouri Valley Conference last month and moved to the American Athletic Conference.

The MVC has invited Valparaiso to join the conference as its 10th team.

Wow, I missed that too.

Isn't the AAC a football-driven conference?

Yes, and ironically it came about because of a football/basketball split of the BE, but this gives them an even number for basketball since Navy is football-only.

It's a shame.

Football-only AAC (they were independent in football until last year when they joined the AAC for football). They play in the Patriot League for all other sports and have since the inception of the conference in 1990-91.

Illinois and DePaul will play each other for the first time since 1957 next season. They were paired for the Gavitt Games which is a B1G vs. Big East event.

This is like going to Maui and having to play Chaminade. I'd be pissed if I were an Illini fan.

In the odd timing department, tOSU just fired Matta.

This would have been wiser a few months ago when you had an obvious replacement in your state.

Insider says OSU wish list includes:
Brad Stevens, Tony Bennett, Jay Wright, Sean Miller & Billy Donovan.
