Yeah, they had to make a call: See what happens with the great class, or just torch the thing now and likely lose all the recruits. I wonder what would've happened if this season with Fultz hadn't been so incredibly shitty. Maybe they figured next year would've been the same, and they'd be starting all over again without the one-and-dones anyway, so might as well make the move now.

But it wasn't just Porter coming in like it was just with Fultz. And those that know more about Porter than I do think pretty much anybody could coach that kid into the tourney. So frankly I think they make a terrible call. Nothing saying they couldn't have fired him in 2018 after the got as far as they could with Porter.

Oh, I agree it was a class for the ages, and I myself would've let him ride another year to see what they could do. I'm just trying to make sense of it from the AD's perspective. She's a new AD, and it would've been easier for her to keep him another year too, but clearly she felt strongly about it. I give her credit for that.

Randy Bennett of Saint Mary's seems to be on the radar of many schools. He was an assistant to Romar at Pepperdine and Saint Louis.

I'll definitely be giving her credit for it. A pretty bad strike one. But hey, why shouldn't we go back to the days when local HS stars like Jamal Crawford never end up at the U&W.

Well, we'll see what happens with the new hire.

Hey, I just read the short list of candidates for AD at UNLV and it includes David Kahn. Yes, THAT David Kahn.

Indiana is a big job opening. It may actually tempt Marshall to leave WSU.

Crean will be back with another major program. UW is actually a good possibility.

Illinois is hiring Oklahoma St. head coach Brad Underwood. If he can recruit I am happy with the hire.

So lame. You coach 1 year at OK State and do a lateral move? If he does well at Illinois, he'll probably leave right away.

Sounds like promises were made that the OK St. AD reneged on.

I'm guessing T. Boone was not impressed with him. Otherwise, he'd write a big check.

Underwood was the lowest paid coach in the Big 12 last year. Underwood asked for a deal that would put him at league average and was told no, the AD is gun shy after giving Travis Ford a huge extension after his first year. That's coming from OK St. people.

He's tripling his salary at Illinois.

He just started last year and it's not like OK St set the world on fire. If he felt he was low paid, then why not negotiate that from the start or just not take the job and stay at SFA and wait for a better offer. Seems like an ass and if he does well, he'll leave Illinois in a heartbeat.

Probably because very few places out there are going to pay him more than Illinois is and it's just a much better job Okie State.

Any time you can double or triple your salary, it certainly doesn't feel like a lateral move.

K-State should have hired him when they had the chance - he would have been their dream hire. It's kind of delicious irony that he's working at Illinois and they have Bruce Webber as their coach.

Much better job?

How do you figure? As in easier? Given the B12 and the current state of the B1G, sure.

Seems like a lateral move to me, yes, money aside.

Chicago-land is now in his backyard. Lon Kruger is no longer down the road. Bill Self is no longer in the same conference. Same with Bruce Weber.

Not just Chicago. Down state Illinois alone still produces more talent on a year to year basis than the state of Oklahoma. One of the best prep schools in the country La Lumire is also very close.

Also Illinois leads Okie State in pretty much every historical category. Most of them are fairly close though. But even if they were all equal I'd still go with the school that has the far more talent rich home state.

Historically Illinois is a much better program than OSU so it's not really a lateral move. But you are right, he seems like a job jumper so it may not be long for him there.

"Program" is such a subjective term in this context. Generally, a coach makes the program (see Alabama football). There's nothing particularly special about Illinois in and of itself. Certainly not "much better."

Look at Maryland, a richer so-called "program" than Illinois - when Gary retired, they basically had to settle for Turgeon. In other words, don't oversell the reputation.

This is why I think Indiana fans will be ultimately disappointed with whomever they get.

Washington hires Syracuse assistant Mike Hopkins. Hopkins was supposed to be Boeheim's replacement when he retired.

I don't blame Hopkins. Would not want to try to follow Boeheim with that fan base.
