I heard someone mention that in WBC years, the MLB schedule should be shortened to 150 games and have the WBC take place in what would normally be the beginning of the MLB season. That's probably the only way to make the casual fan pay attention to it. If the WBC were to take place in November or December, who would pay attention to it? Football would be going on and you would have just witnessed the completion of the long regular season and MLB playoffs.

investigation concludes that Jose Fernandez was driving the boat when it crashed, was drunk and had cocaine in his system, and was going 65mph. Yikes.

Now that's an idea, but I'm guessing it would be a tough sell to owners. They would be losing 6 home games as well as TV/ad revenue from 12 games. That would be a big hit to take for something with no direct benefit to them.

Would all the MLB players agree to a pay cut because they would be playing 12 less games?

The owners are never going to willingly give away home dates. It was quickly shot down when the players suggested going back to 154 games.

It might make sense if you did it over the All Star break and just cancel the All Star game that year .. or turn it into something else (Old Timers game, fan fest, on the site of some WBC games) Some of the days off are already built in.

But you still have the issue that some teams will not be thrilled with their starters going 7+ innings

Edit: on WBC years, Spring Training starts early .. keep starting it early those years and start the season earlier. It sucks there would be more cold weather early season games .. but you could still get 162 games in

Re: 2017 MLB Spring Training thread

In the biggest news so far this Spring Training.the Baltimore Orioles have released useless one inning reliefer Logan Ondrusek. I don't know if the Orioles have another reliefer in their system that can give them a plus 6.00 ERA and a plus 2.00 WHIP. Looks like another lost season for the Orioles(unless they bring back TJ McFarland).

USA is out if they lose tonight in the WBC. America is now only 13-12 in WBC games.

Re: 2017 MLB Spring Training thread

The US finally makes it to the finals of the World Baseball Classic by defeating Japan 2-1. Japan made mistakes in the field in part due to the elements (a rare rainy night in LA), and couldn't get a thing done on offense.

The US wasn't much better, but they didn't make the mistakes Japan did, and got just enough done to win.

This sets up a rematch with Puerto Rico on Wednesday. The Puerto Ricans beat the US on Friday night 6-5 down in San Diego. In that game the US was down 6-3 in the 9th, but got a 2 out triple to pull within 1, and had the tying run at third, but couldn't pull it out.

The only other loss the US has had this year came against the Dominican Republic in the first round, which they avenged on Saturday night to get to the Semi-Finals. So now they have a chance to finally win the classic in the same fashion.

Re: 2017 MLB Spring Training thread

And the US spanks Puerto Rico tonight 8-0 to win their first World Baseball Classic Championship.

Marcus Stroman held the Puerto Ricans hitless for 6 innings, and they ended up with only 3 hits in the game. Stroman was also awarded with the MVP award for the tournament.

Gotta love Theo

Cubs president Theo Epstein scoffs at being named Fortune's No. 1 World Leader: 'I can't even get my dog to stop peeing in the house'

After helping the Chicago Cubs break their 108-year championship drought, team president Theo Epstein was named Fortune's No. 1 World Leader.

Fortune praised Epstein for the team's turnaround calling him the "wunderkind executive" who wisely modeled the Cubs after the Boston Red Sox.

Epstein, however, is not buying it. Esptein had a fantastic reaction to the title, scoffing at it to ESPN's Buster Olney.

"Um, I can't even get my dog to stop peeing in the house. That is ridiculous. The whole thing is patently ridiculous. It's baseball--a pastime involving a lot of chance. If Zobrist's ball is three inches farther off the line, I'm on the hot seat for a failed five-year plan. And I'm not even the best leader in our organization; our players are."

Esptein rounded off the top five, finishing ahead of Alibaba's Jack Ma, Pope Francis, Melinda Gates, and Jeff Bezos.

Good for Theo for keeping things in perspective.

Re: 2017 MLB Spring Training thread

I noticed the Red Sox just assigned Allen Craig to their minor league camp. He's scheduled to make $11 million this year. Obviously, the trade that sent him from St. Louis to Boston a few years back turned out well for the Cardinals, but I'm genuinely saddened by what happened to this guy. It is perplexing to see a player be so solid, then suddenly lose it.

Re: 2017 MLB Spring Training thread

It is too bad. I imagine he won't sniff the majors this year except maybe in September, so he'll have to try to put numbers in AAA this year and get a fresh start next year, unless someone's desperate enough to trade for him.

Re: 2017 MLB Spring Training thread

Craig has never been the same hitter since that injury. He was a late bloomer to begin with and the Cardinals never deal away someone they think is a prime talent. He's basically a DH by this point and only a few AL teams could use him.

Orioles are going to ask MLB for special permission to carry nothing but relief pitchers on their 25 man roster.

That's funny but has enough truth in it to make O's fans grimace.

They(Orioles) have outfielders galore but won't trade them for starting pitching fearing the fact that they wouldn't need to carry many useless one inning pitchers.

On the Blue Jays telecast on Sunday they kept showing a picture of ex-Oriole SP Gallardo instead of a correct picture of Pedro Alvarez(who probably won't make the Orioles).

Favorite stadiums if you did?

I've been to both FLA and AZ but not for several years. The Yankees park was pretty nice, and I've heard good things about the Cubs'.
