Still focusing on the O-Line, I believe there is just too much credit given the physical differences. Superior technique can make up for quite a lot and the average modern NFL O-Lineman just doesn't have it.

Sadly Lurkerdan is right, we'll never know. Because I would take many teams form the 80's over teams from this era and probably win some bets if everybody is going to default to faster and bigger is better. Hell, the receivers alone could excel far better in the modern NFL given the rule differences.

The comparison is tough because the Seahawks don't even have average modern NFL O-linemen.

And sure, I'd take Jerry Rice over Sydney Rice any day of the week. But Antonio Brown would probably be successful in an earlier era as well.

I want to make it clear that I am not just relying on "faster and bigger". I'm also operating on the assumption that the best teams of any era have skilled players, that the best players at their positions are not only big and fast, but skilled, with technique. No doubt big and fast alone doesn't do it, and guys who are not as big or as fast can still be successful. And no doubt, a Jerry Rice would be successful in any era. But I'll take a Joe Thomas (6'6", 312 lbs, 4.92 40) over a Jon Kolb (6'2", 262 lbs) or a Randy Cross (6'3", 259 lbs) any day. That's why I think the best teams of today would be the best teams of 30-40 years ago.

Not sure what I posted that would prompt a response that Antonio Brown wouldn't be successful back then. As successful would be debatable because of DB's being able to by far more physical, and take his head off more than just what the Bengals did last year.

OK. Where we still may disagree is that I believe that the difference in speed and strength has allowed players (even the great ones) to get by without needing to be as good with their technique.

Re: 2016 NFL Playoffs Thread - Super Bowl LI, February 5, 2017

I think that in ALL eras some players have gotten by on physical ability whereas some have used technique (and the best have used both). The most physically gifted players now stand out in comparison to their peers, not to '70s-era players.

Re: 2016 NFL Playoffs Thread - Super Bowl LI, February 5, 2017

The biggest key to success in today's NFL is QB play by far. A team from the 1980s with Marino or Montana would be just as unstoppable in the modern game as today's best QBs.

The biggest differences today are the speed on defense and special teams play. Offensive levels of play wouldn't be much different since the defense always has to react to the offense, not the other way around.

Personally, I find it very appropriate the Patriots are playing in Super Bowl LI(e and cheat).

I think the Patriots win fairly easily if nothing goes wrong.

I don't see anyone reporting on Twitter that he's out. Ian Rapoport last reported that he may need toe surgery after the game.

I'm not watching the pregame so I had no idea who you were talking about until you said Julio.

Meaningless stat of the day... I heard on the radio that 11 of the last 12 teams wearing white have won the Super Bowl.

Deftones posted above me that Julio Jones was out and later deleted his post. Hence some of the confusion of my post to you probably.

That's it. It did feel like part of the conversation was missing, and I hadn't been following the thread earlier.

The team that scores the most points will win. Book it.

More specifically, the Falcons by 9.

The poll has to be closed at the same time of day as it's created, so it has to be closed early or late unless it's created at the exact right time. Sorry you didn't get a chance to vote in the last two weeks.
