And Coco took out #1 and defending champion Kerber. Damn, woke up to some shocking scores this morning.

Watched most of the first set between Zverev and Murray. Mischa was playing well but didn't actually think he was going to win.

And, to be perfectly honest, I did not think Fed would have the legs to beat Nishikori.

She took out my two favourite players(Genie and Angie) back to back.

I guess I'll root for Coco now!

She's one of those women who definitely look better with no makeup on with tussled post-match hair than she does "dolled up".

Crushing Berdych probably helped save the legs. That, and increased court speed helps the attackers. According to announcers/analysts, the courts are faster than the USO courts, which is rather strange. No way M. Zverev would have been able to beat Murray using serve and volley on a "normal" AO court. And I don't think Coco W. would have beaten Kerber on a slower court either.

Not that I'm complaining, let the attackers get the edge for a change.

Re: 2017 Tennis Thread

Coco's 2 career titles are on Grass and on top of that the Hertogenbosch tournament which is probably the quickest in the WTA. I wouldn't be surprised at all if she won here.

Finally though the Aussies switched their surface to something that benefits their own players, too bad Kyrgios flamed out early and didn't benefit from it.

Re: 2017 Tennis Thread

This Australian Open is playing faster than I've seen it in years. The announcers are mostly laying that at the feet of the new balls, which don't fluff up like the balls from prior years.

I actually like seeing a major played on faster hardcourts, so this has been fun from my end. There was no way Mischa Zverev could have beaten Murray on a slower surface. I don't think people quite realize the magnitude of his upset yet after the earlier upset of Djokovic. Mischa had been thinking of retiring to focus on coaching his brother.

It was great seeing someone playing actual serve-and-volley tennis and finding success. There is just something different about seeing a lefthander winning that way.

Wawrinka is very well positioned to win another major.

Now if only Serena would lose this major would become incredibly watchable.

And we all know how that's going to turn out. (not that I have anything against Nadal as a person (seems like a very nice chap), but I despise his "caveman" style of play)

Re: 2017 Tennis Thread

Was surprised to see Thiem was so easily dispatched after winning the first set and hitting some of the hardest ground strokes I have ever seen.

He goes all out on every shot. I'm not sure I've ever seen a player win a Slam on the men's side playing that style. It just takes one bad day with that hard-hitting style to lose a match.

After Venus just beat Pavlyuchenkova:

Yes. NO.

Venus in the SF at a non Wimbledon Slam for the first time since 2003. If she were to win here it would be a way bigger story then anything the other 3 are doing.

I always liked Venus.

Would be awesome if she could win this.

Re: 2017 Tennis Thread

If Coco has her timing working as well in a couple of days as she did last night, she will beat Venus.

Also, a Serena/Pliskova semi could be dramatic. Pliskova beat her in straight sets the one and only other time they have met in a major, which was at the U.S. Open a few months ago.

Re: 2017 Tennis Thread

I'm intrigued by Serena vs Konta. Brit has been playing really well.

Fed crushed M. Zverev. Should be a good one against Stan.

She has, but I still don't really see all that much improvement in her game since last year. I don't think she has the firepower to beat Serena playing reasonably well. Interestingly enough, they have never played so at least Konta doesn't have a history of failure to mentally overcome.

Re: Fed vs. Sta, their head to head is more one-sided than I thought it would be. Stan is only 3-18 against him and his only three wins have come on clay. No matches since 2015 though, the last two on hard courts both being straight set Federer wins.

Re: 2017 Tennis Thread

Kind of a embarrassing stat. Coco is the first American not named "Venus" or "Serena" to beat a world #1 at a major since...Jennifer Capriati at the 2001 French Open when she cruised through Serena (then a 6 seed), #1 Hingis and then Clijsters on her way to the title.

Re: 2017 Tennis Thread

Coco's success at the AO isn't surprising. She's a hard, flat hitter built for faster hardcourts. This year's AO is just about the fastest major I've seen in years, possibly going back to the early 2000s.

ESPN claimed the other night that Coco's forehands and backhands are the hardest by velocity on the women's tour, harder than even Serena's groundstrokes.
