Re: 2017 Tennis Thread

to Nadal, as when he's healthy he's unbeatable.

I still contend to the Pro-Best of 5 Fans in this thread, that there is no difference in entertainment value to Nadal's victory today and a 6-2, 6-1 win by Serena. These dominant matches are predictable whether they are Best of 3 or 5.

Move the US Open up a week before the NFL starts so you actually have a chance to grab casual viewers and go to Best of 3. Make Labor Day a Singles Finals Doubleheader for Men and Women too.

Yay Rafa! Wish he could have closed out the Aussie title. Would be 18-17.

Considering he would have had to beat Nadal in the semis, probably not. But again, it's not Nadal's fault that the draw broke for him like it did. I blame Murray.

Yes, Nadal has never lost a match when healthy, it's truly amazing!

Which was why I had picked Nadal to win Wimbledon this year. I was obviously wrong.

There is no ESPN American tennis audience, only the American tennis audience. I would argue that ESPN is actually slightly less patronizing and simple-minded in their coverage than NBC was. Slightly.

As for it being all about Roger and Serena, I wonder how much of this is true and how much is us thinking it must be true based on the broadcast product that major broadcasters keep trying to shove down our throat year after year. Obviously, there is at least a little truth to it, but it does seem overstated to me, if not a propaganda machine in action.

Perhaps it is a biased sample fallacy, but between my blood relatives, my in-laws, a couple of close friends and a few co-workers, I have a pretty decent pool of fairly enthusiastic tennis fans that I regularly interact with. "All about Serena and Roger" accurately describes exactly none of them, although many are a fan of both.

Re: 2017 Tennis Thread

Yeah, I don't think they have the pull that Tiger had with Golf. I don't know of anyone who follows Tennis for them (or any other specific athlete). MANY people watched golf only for Tiger. Tennis seems to be more of an all-in or all-out sport.

If anything, women's tennis should get much more exciting when Serena decides she has enough major trophies.

Oh come on, you know what I meant as I was generalizing about his career. Federer has stayed relatively healthy throughout his career where Nadal has been injured a lot throughout his career.

So really you blame Fed for getting his butt kicked by Delpo .

Depends on who is replacing her,you get a Radwanska vs Pliskova USO Final and scalpers are selling their seats for 5$ hours before the final .Tv ratings will drop off 80% in the Usa from if their is no Maria,Sloane, Woz,Serena or Venus or some other name/personality in the final

This entire year may have turned out much differently if Nadal had beaten Fed down in Australia.

Even if Nadal does pass Fed one day in most Slams, the tennis press will always call Federer the greatest.

I know. Like, does Fed still win Wimbledon? Or does Rafa win the Grand Slam and is up 18-17 instead.

Hingis won both, and, if I mathed correctly, she now has 25 Grand Slam Titles between singles, doubles and mixed doubles. Of course, Serena has 39, but still an amazing career.

Fed owned Rafa this year. All because of AO, right.

Re: 2017 Tennis Thread

Nadal hasn't put up much of a challenge to anyone on hardcourts in a few years. I was surprised he even made it that far at the Australian Open. Both Federer and Nadal winning as much as they did this year says more about the declining men's field when Murray and Djokovic are out of the running.

Wozniacki in the finals of Tokyo Sunday. She is already 0-6 in finals. Would be kind of funny if she makes it to number 1 without winning a title over a 52 week span.

Re: 2017 Tennis Thread

Despite the exhibition feel, there were some very good matches. And you could tell that when the score got tight, none of these guys wanted to be on the losing end. In the end, they were all fired up and it was fun to watch.

It's in Chicago next year.
