2016-17 NCAA College Football Off-Season and Coaching Carousel Thread

The season ended yesterday for several schools and today for many more.

Congratulations to Ed Orgeron for getting the full-time LSU head coaching gig. He seems like a good guy and players love him.

Edit : I know I forget the word Football in the thread title. Will message a mod to fix it. Sorry.

Texas stuns absolutely nobody by firing Charlie Strong and hiring Tom Herman. At this point it was the only move they could make.

Looks like Oregon is ready to fire Mark Helfrich. They're what, two years-post a National Championship game? Nike apparently makes very short leashes.

It's costing Texas $19M to fire Strong/hire Herman.

Charlie Strong's deal ($10.2 million), his assistants ($6.3 million) and Tom Herman's buyout ($2.5 million)

Glad to see Baylor has found a solution to make absolutely sure that their football program will no longer show indifference to sexual assault allegations of women.

Kevin Wilson, who was just signed to a 6-year contract extension in January and who led Indiana to their first back-to-back bowl appearances since the Ice Ages - will be terminated today.

Sources: IU to dismiss football coach Kevin Wilson

Indiana University will announce the dismissal of football coach Kevin Wilson at a news conference at 6 this evening, according to sources in the athletic department.

Sources have confirmed to IndyStar a team meeting is scheduled for 5:15 p.m.
Awful timing. Yeah, sure, finishing 6-6 for most schools means you're kinda mediocre. But when you play in the same 7-team division as three top-10 nationally ranked programs, and when you've historically been a doormat in the Big Ten and are not able to recruit nearly the type of talent you're opponents can, "mediocre" takes on a whole new meaning. Going to a bowl game if you play in Bloomington is huge - going to consecutive bowl games is damn near unprecedented success. So sacking your just-signed HC after doing this but before you even know which bowl game you're playing in.... it really sounds like something very, very bad has happened behind the scenes.

Former Louisville QB and most recently WKU head coach takes over at Purdue.

Ironically, Purdue and Louisville open up against each other next season.

As a Temple alum, sad to see Ruhl leave for Baylor. Though I can't blame the guy for going for the dollars and a job in a Power 5 conference. Really sucks though to see teams like Houston and Temple try to step up, start beating the big boys, only to get raided and knocked back down the ladder. Seems like the only long-term hope is for enough expansion of the Power 5 that they get accepted to one. The American was surprisingly good the last couple of years (ranked even higher this year than the Big 12 for overall strength).

I'm not sure I recall a stranger story than this:

Wake Forest has discovered that their radio announcer (a former player) has been distributing game plans to opponents for the last several years.

Just came to post that. What a strange outcome to what seemed like external spying.

Minnesota has fired coach Tracy Claeys, the school has confirmed. Claeys and athletic director Mark Coyle met today.

He shouldn't have tweeted support for his players, I guess. He won't be out of work for long.

Re: 2016-17 NCAA College Football Off-Season and Coaching Carousel Thread

Thank the Lord for those good God-fearing Christians at the University of Baylor. They do things the right way.

Baylor assistant strength coach Brandon Washington fired after solicitation charge
9:38 PM PT

Baylor has fired newly hired assistant strength coach Brandon Washington after he was arrested in a Waco prostitution sting.

McLennan County (Texas) Sheriff Parnell McNamara says deputies arrested the 33-year-old coach at a Waco-area hotel on a prostitution solicitation charge, a Class B misdemeanor which is punishable by up to 180 days in jail and a $2,000 fine. A Baylor spokesperson said in a statement that Washington's employment was immediately terminated that day.

Washington had been recently hired after previously working for new Baylor football coach Matt Rhule at Temple for the past three years. According to the school, Washington passed a criminal background check before his hiring.

"When we arrived at Baylor, we made a commitment to character and integrity in our program," Rhule said in a statement. "Brandon's actions are completely unacceptable. We will not tolerate conduct that is contradictory to these values."

Rhule was hired in December to help reform Baylor's football program in the midst of the university's ongoing sexual-assault scandal that resulted in the firing of football coach Art Briles and the departures of athletic director Ian McCaw and president Ken Starr.

Washington's firing comes after sources told ESPN's Outside the Lines last week that the NCAA is casting a wide net to determine what NCAA rules might have been violated during Baylor's sexual-assault scandal.

The NCAA is also asking whether Baylor players might have been provided improper recruiting inducements and other illegal benefits while playing for the Bears, according to the sources.

Big 12 commissioner Bob Bowlsby, meanwhile, didn't pull punches Friday while speaking to ESPN during an appearance at a regularly scheduled conference board meeting in Dallas.

"I think everybody's pretty much in the barrel, but I don't know if anybody knows where the bottom of the barrel is," Bowlsby said of Baylor.

Re: 2016-17 NCAA College Football Off-Season and Coaching Carousel Thread

Get well soon, Coach Snyder! Maybe it's time to step back and enjoy your Golden years?

Bill Snyder expected to attend K-State spring practice despite throat cancer diagnosis
6:39 AM PT

Longtime Kansas State coach Bill Snyder has been diagnosed with throat cancer but is expected to be on the field for the start of the Wildcats' spring practice next month.

Snyder announced the diagnosis in a lengthy statement Monday, saying that he has been receiving treatment for three weeks and that doctors have "projected a positive outcome."

"I have been diagnosed with throat cancer and have been receiving outpatient treatment at the KU Medical Center for about three weeks and am getting along very well," Snyder said in his statement. "The doctors and staffs at both KU Med and M.D. Anderson [in Houston] have been great; working so very well together to finalize the overall treatment plan which is being conducted in Kansas City. Both 'teams' have projected a positive outcome and have worked out a schedule that allows me to be in Kansas City for my regular treatments and still be back in the office on a regular basis through the first week of March."
Bill Snyder said he has been undergoing treatment for throat cancer for the past three weeks.

Snyder, 77, said his son Sean, the Wildcats' associate head coach/special teams coordinator, and the rest of the coaching staff will continue in "carrying out their responsibilities keeping us on track" when he is away from the team.

Snyder also addressed widespread speculation about his health, apologizing for publicly disclosing his diagnosis before having the opportunity to tell some friends and family members.

"Coach Snyder's health is of the utmost importance, and he has our full support during this time," Kansas State athletic director John Currie said. "We will provide all of the necessary accommodations he and his family need to ensure a smooth treatment process. He will remain our head coach during this treatment period, and we look forward to seeing him on the field this spring and in pursuit of career win No. 203 on Sept. 2."

Snyder, who was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame two years ago, won his 200th game with the Wildcats in 2016. Kansas State finished 9-4 last season and defeated Texas A&M in the AdvoCare V100 Texas Bowl.
