In his defense, no lead this year is safe for the Timberwolves.

The Baby Lakers just beat the Thunder at home and have tied them in the standings with identical 8-7 records. Yes, you read that correctly.

Nick Young with the game winner too. Who'd have thought the guy to end the two and a half year losing streak to the Thunder even a month ago would be NICK YOUNG?!?!?

I thought this was the next guy on his way to China. He must have thought so too because here we are.

Lakers

Swaggy P is already IMO a good candidate for NBA Most Improved Player.

By the way, how the hell do the Clippers have the NBA's best record right now?

D-Lo is out 2 games, but Calderon gave them some good minutes tonight. Turned out to be a valuable pickup.

Re: 2016-17 NBA Regular Season Thread

Nick Young is still Nick Young though. Stole the pass from his own teammate to drain the game winner.

But he did a decent job on Westbrook on defense (well about as good a job as you can do holding him to just under a trip dub) as well as carrying the load on offense with Russell out and Randle a bit gimpy.

Luol Deng might be the worst starter in the league though.

So the Spurs are trying to go 41 - 1 on the road this season, I can dig it. Can Aldridge and Gasol even pretend to care on defense, though?

just saw that out of nowhere, Marc Gasol is attempting 3.5 3-pointers a game (highest amount made in any previous season: 3). And making 40% of them!

It's weird how a lot of big men have picked up 3 point shooting in the last few years.

Westbrook is now averaging a triple double.

Westbrook wins MVP, you heard it here first.

Re: 2016-17 NBA Regular Season Thread

Who doubted Westbrook would be a stat king and a favorite for MVP? Only him getting hurt, or OKC having a shitty record, could have keep it from happening (given how many dismiss MVP candidates because the team does poorly).

No way he wins MVP with them ending up as the 7th or 8th seed.

Re: 2016-17 NBA Regular Season Thread

As soon as Durant was gone everyone knew that Westbrook would put up crazy stats. As for MVP though, I think if Westbrook averages a triple double or close to it and the team still makes the playoffs, he's a prime candidate.

Any other candidate, at least the way it looks so far, either are going to split votes because of their team (Curry/Durant, Lebron with Kyrie/Love who are having great seasons). Unless their respective teams end up terrible like Anthony Davis, seems like Westbrook or Harden have the inside track.

Well, yeah, it's not like I was going out on a limb in assuming that Westbrook would do well in Durant's absence.

But it's more than crazy stats, it's just what you mentioned. A solo superstar willing his team to the playoffs with incredible performances has a leg up on players from teams that have multiple stars (or players on teams that are bad like the Pelicans). Take Curry or Lebron away from those teams, and they're still playoff teams. Take Westbrook away from OKC (or Harden from Rockets) and you have a grade A dumpster fire. Kinda puts the V in MVP.

I still believe he will win MVP, if OKC makes the playoffs (which I think they will). He won't average a triple double but he'll come fairly close.

Re: 2016-17 NBA Regular Season Thread

It also helps that media "stories" always seem to play a big role in deciding these things. Westbrook averaging a triple double is a pretty big deal statistics wise in the NBA, and if it comes down to the last dozen games and he's close, the media will be all over it given the historical aspect of the feat.

I'm not sure some of the other leading players/teams, like DeRozan, Leonard, or Paul are going to generate the same attention doing the things we're accustomed to seeing.

Oh shit, Nick Young left the game tonight with an Achilles injury. They are already shorthanded enough.

Lakers getting blown out by the awful Pelicans.

Nick Young out two to four weeks.

If Westbrook averages a triple double with close to 30 points a game, I don't care if OKC misses the playoffs, he's the MVP.

Racking up stats isn't being valuable to your team though if you aren't winning.
