Nice to see Canada back in the playoffs with a vengeance this year.

Toronto needs at least one point against Columbus to play Ottawa in the playoffs. If not, they will play Washington.

They needed it. Last season when NO Canadian teams were in the playoffs must have cost Rogers Sportsnet a fortune in revenue.

Re: NHL Regular Season Thread - 2016/17 Edition

Final day of the regular season. Here's what's at stake:

EASTERN CONFERENCE

Capitals - Have clinched #1 Metropolitan seed, will play Leafs or Bruins
Penguins / Jackets - Have clinched #2 & #3 seeds, will play each other
Canadiens - Have clinched #1 Atlantic seed, will play Rangers
Senators - Have clinched #2 Atlantic seed, will play Leafs or Bruins

Leafs/Bruins are tied on 95 points. Bruins are done but hold tiebreak. Leafs will take 3rd place (and play Ottawa in the Atlantic playoffs) with a point against Columbus today, sending Boston to play Washington (in the Metropolitan playoffs). A regulation loss will flip-flop the two teams.

WESTERN CONFERENCE

Blackhawks - Have clinched #1 Central seed, will play Predators
Wild / Blues - Have clinched #2 & #3 seeds, will play each other
Ducks / Oilers - Will be top two seeds in Pacific. #1 plays Calgary, #2 plays San Jose
San Jose - Have clinched #3 seed, will play #2 (Ducks or Oilers)
Calgary - Have clinched first Wild Card, will play #1 (Ducks or Oilers)

Updated: Ducks are 2 points up on Oilers, both have a game to play, Oilers hold the tiebreak. A Duck point or an Oiler loss will give Anaheim the #1 seed (will play Calgary) and will give Edmonton the #2 seed (will play San Jose). A Duck regulation loss + an Oiler win will flip-flop the two teams.

Jackets at Leafs, 6pm ET
Kings at Ducks, 8:30pm ET
Canucks at Oilers, 9pm ET

Re: NHL Regular Season Thread - 2016/17 Edition

Not that the NHL has exciting last day's of the regular season each year but when was the last time this happened in the NBA? Never ???

Is it true the NBA has no tie breaker protocol for the final standings since the teams are so apart in the standings. If the NBA ever finished with a three way tie,Adam Silver would poop his pants.

Re: NHL Regular Season Thread - 2016/17 Edition

Lindy Ruff’s time in Dallas is over.

The Stars announced on Sunday that the team will not renew Ruff's contract, which expires at the end of the 2016-17 season, only one year after capturing a Central Division title.

The Stars ended the year with a 34-37-11 record, finishing sixth in the division and 11th in the Western Conference.

You're right. My bad. The table I was looking at showed Anaheim having played 82 games already.

Anaheim takes the division with a point or and Edmonton loss.
Oilers take the division with a win and a Ducks regulation loss.

NBA tiebreakers:

a. Two Teams Tied
(1) Better winning percentage in games against each other
(2) Better winning percentage against teams in own division (only if tied teams are in same division).
(3) Better winning percentage against teams in own conference.
(4) Better winning percentage against teams eligible for playoffs in own conference (including teams that finished the regular season tied for a playoff position).
(5) Better winning percentage against teams eligible for playoffs in opposite conference (including teams that finished the regular season tied for a playoff position).
(6) Better net result of total points scored less total points allowed against all opponents ("point differential").

b. More Than Two Teams Tied
(1) Better winning percentage in all games among the tied teams.
(2) Better winning percentage against teams in own division (only if all tied teams are in the same division).
(3) Better winning percentage against teams in own conference.
(4) Better winning percentage against teams eligible for playoffs in own conference (including teams that finished the regular season tied for a playoff position).
(5) Better net result of total points scored less total points allowed against all opponents ("point differential").

Guess as long as Jim Nill keeps winning offseasons he will be safe.

Frankly, I like the decision a little. I still instinctively think that the team in the white sweater is the home team, in spite of the NHL switching that around many years ago to boost sales for alternate home sweaters. In fact, I prefer the Blues white "road" sweater over their colored "home" sweater and wish they could switch back. If all teams have only one white and one dark sweater for 2017-18, maybe the league will also allow teams to wear their whites at home.

Don't you like seeing the white jersey of every other team in the league come to your building? I still hate this decision for that reason. I doubt they ever go back to home whites but here's hoping.

Wouldn't they sell more jersey's if teams wore their dark uniforms on the road?

I want the Winter Classic jersey to become the home jersey.

The Kings fired Sutter and Lombardi today. Can't say I'm surprised about either.

I wouldn't let Lombardi run a fantasy team.

The cool side-effect is that the Adidas inventory is likely to be sold-off at a discount. I scored a $90 blank men's sewn white sweater, straight from the Blues Pro Shop, and got it in time to wear last night during Game 2.
