Yeah crazy how the Hawks are rolling - I was at the game against MN last weekend and the Wild didn't look bad but pulling Dubnyk was a shocker.

Personally, I don't care about NHL players in the Olympics. I find it gets too much attention over all the other events that I think of when it comes to the Olympics.

He will have a lot of players pissed off though. Especially the Europeans, as they take it to be bigger than the Stanley Cup.

Wild lose again, that's 9 out of their last 11 they've lost. Hawks win or a Blues win and the Wild will be closer to the Blues in the standings than they are to the Hawks.

Blues had one shot on goal during the latter half of the third period and OT. Gave up the game winner with 2.5 seconds left. Blah.

Re: NHL Regular Season Thread - 2016/17 Edition

Not too worried. Their schedule was front-loaded.... nearly all of the remaining opponents are non playoff contenders at this point. It'll be a dogfight with Nashville for 3rd, but I expect the Preds (who have a tougher schedule) to drop points.

Probably looking at a Blues-Wild opening round series.

The other interesting scenario is where Nashville takes 3rd and the Blues finish right on their tail. If Calgary (+2 pts right now) drop a game or two, St Louis might luck into the #1 wildcard and get sent to the Pacific for the first two rounds. They've had a lot of success during the latter part of the season against the Snarks and Dux... wouldn't be surprised to see them favored in a 7-game series against either of them while Calgary/Chicago/Minnesota/Nashville beat each other up in the Central.

Regardless, it's pretty much assured that we know who the 8 Western playoff teams will be. The only thing to settle is the bracketing.

Re: NHL Regular Season Thread - 2016/17 Edition

Standings and Schedule (West) - games against likely playoff teams in bold

95 *ANA (@WPG @EDM @CGY CGY CHI LOS) - 6 games/4 against probable playoff teams - 55% ROWP
93 *SAN (@EDM @CGY @VAN VAN EDM CGY) - 6/4 - 51% ROWP
93 *EDM (SAN ANA @LOS @SAN @VAN VAN) - 6/3 - 49% ROWP
90 CGY (LOS SAN ANA @ANA @LOS @SAN) - 6/4 - 53% ROWP
77 LOS

103 **CHI (@PIT CBJ BOS @COL @ANA @LOS) - 6/4 - 52% ROWP
96 *MIN (OTT @NSH COL CAR @COL @ARI) - 6/2 - 40% ROWP
89 NSH (TOR MIN @STL NYI @DAL @WPG) - 6/3 - 49% ROWP
88 STL (@ARI @COL NSH WPG @MIA @CAR COL) - 7/1 - 39% ROWP
77 WPG

** - clinched top-2 division finish
* - clinched playoff berth

ROWP = Remaining Opponents' Winning Percentage. Lower % is easier schedule.

CGY can clinch playoff with 1 win
NSH/STL can clinch playoff with 2 wins

Nice ... I see some guys resting the last few games and a few more call-ups from Rockford

With the Wild’s 3-0 loss to the Predators on Saturday in Nashville, Tenn., the Blackhawks clinched the Central Division title and home-ice advantage through the Western Conference playoffs

The NHL says it will not participate in the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, South Korea. The league announced its decision in a statement and now says it considers the matter "officially closed."

Jemele Hill said on Sportscenter tonight it's shortsighted by the NHL to not Participate in the Olympics and that the NHL should use it as an opportunity to grow the game internationally

They had a headline at ESPN.com the other day that said-Ovechkin Doesn't Care-Will Play In Game(I think that was it). They make it sound like he doesn't give a damn about the Olympics but would play anyways, however if you read the story sounds like he want's too play.

Re: NHL Regular Season Thread - 2016/17 Edition

If my math is correct,it looks like the Maple Leafs need 2 points or a regulation loss my both Tampa Bay and NY Islanders too clinch a playoff spot . In other words, here's hoping the Leafs lose twice in OT(and get that cheap loser's point) and they are in the playoffs.

What help's matters is Ottawa(still hasn't clinched) play's NY Islanders the last game of the regular season.

Re: NHL Regular Season Thread - 2016/17 Edition

Meanwhile, the Blues gotta decide... Do they want to play in the Central playoffs, opening against the slumping (but dangerous) Wild and then playing the Hawks.... or do they want to sand bag and try to cross-over to the Pacific where they would likely take on the Ducks (whom they've had success against) and then the Oilers (who are red-hot), while the Hawks-Wild-Predators-Flames all beat up on each other?

Sang-bag: Blues can get the #7 slot if they finish behind Nashville but ahead of Calgary.

Blues (45-29-7) 93 (3 games to play)
Flames (44-32-4) 92 (2)
Preds (40-28-12) 92 (2)

Blues have clinched ROW tiebreak over Preds 42-38, so Preds must finish ahead of Blues to claim 3rd place and Blues must then finish ahead of Calgary for the #7 seed. Blues cannot lose ROW tiebreak (lead 42-40) to Calgary, and if it ends even at 42-42, Blues would need 4 points to stay ahead of Flames, which would put them ahead of Preds and in 3rd place, which is outside of our scenario. Therefore, Blues would win any tie with Calgary if they were competing for Wild Card.

Therefore, to Sand Bag their way into the Pacific playoffs, all of this has to happen:

* Preds win two (at Dallas 4/6, at Winnipeg 4/8)
* Blues get two or fewer points (at Florida 4/7, at Carolina 4/8, Colorado 4/9) while not allowing Calgary to pass them. Finishing tied on points is just as good.
* Calgary gets as no more than one point MORE than Blues get (at Los Angeles 4/6, at San Jose 4/8)

If Preds win out and Calgary splits to earns 2 points, Blues could clinch #7 seed with exactly 2 points.
