Thanks for starting the thread! Maybe one of the mods could clean up the title a bit so it doesn't bug us for the next six months.

Hale fired. Tony Stewart fire. Honestly, Stewart should go. He made a mess of the team. But Hale has shown he can manage (last season). This year the Dbacks were decimated with injuries and the horrific season by Miller. He should have got one more year.

Wow, he's been moonlighting as a baseball GM? Now wonder the D-Backs were horrible.

Now he can go back and devote his full attention to NASCAR since he's terrible on that this year.

Re: Mlb off-season 2016-17

Stewart was a weird hire. He hadn't worked in a front office in 15 years.

Re: Mlb off-season 2016-17

Tony Stewart would have probably been a better GM than Dave was. He was only hired because of the LaRussa connection. LaRussa may be out too, but no word on that yet.

It's the final year of the latter's contract. I might have a stroke if they sign him to an extension.

He definitely didn't do himself any favors with the "interim" comment.

Unless the team really tanks next year, I think you might need to be prepared for that stroke.

They've been a winning team every year under this regime. Players seem to love Matheny. For the most part, Mo seems to like Matheny and doesn't have to force his hand too much. All that said, Matheny is clearly a mediocre tactician. I don't think there are many other managers in baseball that would have kept trotting Jonathan Broxton out there in games that mattered, for example. However I tend to be of the school of thought that says tactical decisions by managers (as long as they aren't absurdly outside of reasonable) end up being a relatively small factor in the overall collection of things that impact the win/loss column.

Players love Matheny because he will play you day in and day out even when you suck.

I thought this might be the minor league thread and was ready to discuss the the moves made by the Lehigh Valley IronPigs and the Montgomery Biscuits.

Thanks for the fix, mods!

Bacon is kind of the master of knowing what's going on in the sports world, knowing which events we don't have threads for, then throwing up a half-assed thread and disappearing.

Re: 2016-2017 MLB Off Season Thread

Olney:

Quote:
Major League Baseball is pushing for an international draft as a centerpiece of change in the next collective bargaining agreement with the players' association, according to sources familiar with the proposal.

The current agreement expires in December, and the two sides have been in negotiations.

Under the terms of MLB's initial concept, the new international draft system would start in March of 2018, with a 10-round draft held over two days. As the new structure evolved, with terms grandfathered into the process, the minimum age for draft-eligible players would be 18 years old by 2021.
