Re: 2016-2017 MLB Off Season Thread

I'm hearing that people in Verlander's camp said a trade to the Dodgers is very likely. I hope we can get Urias in that deal.

Urias is probably untouchable.

I would think Urias is a must for any deal for Sale. I fully expect the White Sox to fuck up any rebuild they try under the current ownership and regime. By the time they get to be competitive, Detroit will be too and they will just kick the Sox ass with new players.

Re: 2016-2017 MLB Off Season Thread

I'm going to be annoyed with the Dodgers all over again if they pick up top players with dollars rather than giving up talent. I would think they wouldn't trade Urias, but you'd have to consider it for a established, relatively young, reasonably paid stud like Sale.

Did you read it in my earlier post? Kidding, it's not quite the same thing, but anyway I also would've been fine bringing back Hammel, but I guess this is where the dance gets tricky. They're no longer trying to win a WS, but to build the foundation for a consistent winner year in and year out.

$10 million isn't chump change, but it's not bad for a veteran free agent. Obviously you could spend less on Montgomery, Cahill, a minor leaguer, or a reclamation project, but you don't know you'll get the same results. In addition to Lackey, Jake could walk after next year as well, so I guess they want the younger guy in order to not turn over three guys next year.

I wonder how Jake's contract talks will be affected by his up-and-down year. It sure was great to have him in the playoffs, but obviously he wasn't the pitcher he was in 2015. But then few have ever been.

That might be where Having won and shown they could be good for a long time, I would think there will always be some good veteran players going for a ring that will sign with them versus the previous retreads (many of which panned out really well)

Absolutely. A young veteran signing a reasonable contract could compete for a title for several years. Maybe they can get a couple bullpen pieces that way in addition to a starter.

Of course they'll never be a part of The Team That Broke the Curse, but it's still good to win.

Roberts was a good choice. The way he held the team together after all the injuries was pretty amazing.

I'm thinking Betts or Altuve wins AL MVP.

Poor Mike Trout.

Pretty weird that Porcello won despite getting 8 first-place votes to Verlander's 14, but he got 18 second-places to Verlander's two, and Verlander got 4 fourths and 3 fifths.

and got left off 2 ballots altogether. That's the kicker.

Quote:
What put Porcello over the top in the overall voting by a 137-132 margin over Verlander were his 18 second-place votes, coupled with the fact that two Tampa, Florida-based writers -- Fred Goodall of The Associated Press and Bill Chastain of MLB.com -- left Verlander off their ballots entirely.

Voters list their five picks in order. A first-place vote is worth seven points, four for second, three for third, two for fourth and one for fifth. Verlander needed to pick up five more points to match Porcello.

"I feel bad that people are upset about this. I did the best I could," Chastain told the New York Daily News. "I went around the clubhouse. I asked guys. I agonized over this. The biggest thing for me was between [Orioles closer Zach] Britton and Porcello."
Kinda crazy.

Sounds like Porcello won electoral college but lost popular vote.

Re: 2016-2017 MLB Off Season Thread

Verlander would have won if the two writers had included him on their ballots. What I don't like is that Verlander is a future Hall of Famer and deserves another Cy Young than giving it to a fluke season by Porcello.

I feel pretty confident in saying that Porcello never wins 20 games again in his career or sniffs another Cy Young award.

I don't think a fluke season matters, since it's not about career performance but the individual season. Verlander's HOF career or Porcello never being great again is irrelevant.

That said, Verlander seemed to have better numbers in many categories over the other starters listed like Kluber or Porcello, so no clue how he was left off ballots.

I don't believe that is entirely accurate. From what I read, if he got votes from those 2 writers, he would have had to received 5th place votes or higher feom both to have won. So he could have still received those voted and lost.

Trout

Bryant! Murphy gets the other first-place vote and finishes second, barely ahead of Seager.

Porcello 22 win,Verlander 16 wins.

On June 16th Verlander was 7-6 with a 4.30 ERA. He had a strong second half, 9-3 which doesn't mean he deserved the Cy Young Award.
