Chip Hale ended up back on the A's like i was hoping. Replaced Ron Washington as 3rd base coach.

The international system has been screwed up for decades. A draft would be a big improvement following the spending caps that they tried to use to level the playing field. Of course dollars will continue to dictate strategies so there's no perfect system.

The international draft killed Puerto Rico's production. It likely hampers the Latin American pipeline as top international stars sign at 16 for big money. These are kids from poor countries. It will make their career path even more of a crapshoot with a less desirable payout.

The problem with the draft in regards to Puerto Rico is that the MLB forced Puerto Rican-born players into the first-year draft, putting them in the same pipeline and made them adhere to the same rules as highly scouted American players. THAT is what killed Puerto Rico's production, not the idea of a draft itself. You wouldn't run into the same problems with an international only draft. I think they should move Puerto Rican players to the International Draft, even though they technically aren't "international".

And most players aren't receiving those big money paydays at age 16. Most of them aren't even fully scouted. A real draft where every team is picking international players would open up the league to view a lot more players.

Jose Fernandez's toxicology report showed his blood alcohol level was almost twice the legal limit and he had cocaine in his system.

What a shock. I'm tired of people saying. He was such a good guy, doesn't do drugs blah blah blah. Teammates says he smelled of alcohol before they left. Not saying he deserved it but he doesn't deserve the sympathy

Reports are that he wasn't the one driving the boat, and the other two did not have BAC above the limit. If that's true, what does it matter if he was shitfaced and high on coke?

^^ Not to be argumentative... but it was, what, 2am? How the hell would anybody be able to see who was driving and state it as factual? Sounds like a preventative argument against a smear campaign and lawsuit against any of his earnings. Let's just blame one of the two unknowns - who just happened to not be legally drunk.

I read a report that says that he was on the phone with someone while they were on the boat, and they heard him giving direction/instruction to someone else on the boat, which if true is good evidence (though definitely not conclusive) that he was not driving at the time of the accident.

ETA: http://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/1...-boating-crash

Quote:
Ralph Fernandez, the family's attorney and of no relation to the pitcher, told The Miami Herald that investigators have strong evidence that Fernandez was not piloting the boat. He called the cocaine use out of character for the pitcher.

"That leads me to think, could this be an isolated incident? Yes. Could this have been involuntary? Yes. Why do you think there's still a criminal investigation pending?" the attorney said.

Authorities have interviewed a "highly reliable" witness who said he was on the phone with Fernandez just before the crash and heard the pitcher giving another person directions about where to steer the boat, he said.

"If you tell me that he'd been drinking, I'd say, 'So?'" Ralph Fernandez said. "He wasn't driving, and he was very careful about that."
Yes, self serving, so who knows?

Regradless of who was driving the boat, it's shocking that an All-Star MLB starting pitcher would have any cocaine in his system two days before a start. Don't they drug-test regularly?

Why would one want to take directions from a guy that was drinking and on coke anyways? But as Decker said, I do think the MLB drug tests and why take coke before an upcoming start. I get the drinking, but I think the coke does matter.

This will inevitably get spun into "he deserved what happened" by some because of the coke. For all we know he never did coke before in-season and it was the fight with his GF that caused him to do that impulsively. Obviously a huge mistake for the guy either way.

Re: 2016-2017 MLB Off Season Thread

Guaranteed Rate is getting lit up on Twitter over the new sign for White Sox park. The Sox share some blame in this for sure but the ISFA had a say in who got the naming rights so it's not completely on the Sox. They suggested a home plate in place of the down arrow and were denied by Guaranteed Rate. Fun times!

http://www.latimes.com/business/holl...102-story.html

Quote:
The U.S. Justice Department on Wednesday took the extraordinary step of suing AT&T, alleging that its DirecTV television unit orchestrated an illegal campaign to block wide carriage of the television channel owned by the Los Angeles Dodgers.

In a lawsuit filed in federal court in Los Angeles, the Justice Department accused DirecTV of being a ringleader in an effort to make sure that three other pay-TV companies — Cox Communications, Charter Communications and AT&T (which was then separate from DirecTV) -- would refuse to carry SportsNet LA, the Dodgers-owned TV channel that broadcasts the team’s games.

Obviously the people here outside of LA don't care about this news, but this is a ridiculous lawsuit. The Dodgers don't care. They got paid. Spectrum is the one who is getting screwed for this bad TV deal and is bleeding money. You can't fault the providers for not wanting to take a single team RSN for that kind of money (almost $5 per month from last reports)

Spectrum wants the channel subsidized for all subscribers and Directv refuses to do it along with all these other providers holding out.

I'm already tired of hearing people say he will be traded.

Who is going to take his brittle ass and pay him $12m?
