At a 10:30 a.m. St. Louis time press conference, the Cardinals will announce a five-year, $51-million extension for another young starter on the rise, Carlos Martinez. The amount is a record number for a first-time arbitration-eligible pitcher. He will make $4.5 million in 2017. According to sources the deal also includes two option years, worth $17 million for 2022 and $18 million for 2023. The total value of the deal could reach $86 million over seven years, and by the end of it the Cardinals will have had control of four free-agent years for a potential ace.

I agree the penalties were stiff but could've been even worse.

I wonder if the Cards considered the possibility that they might lose picks when they were looking at signing Dexter Fowler. That deal looks even better when they ultimately lose a third-rounder instead of a first-rounder.

Re: 2016-2017 MLB Off Season Thread

No surprise, but Marte moves to center and McCutchen to right. Even though he plays for a rival, I'd like to see Cutch come back.

Jason Hammel to the Royals for two years at $8M per. He's not a great pitcher, but that seems pretty cheap in today's market. His reputation for second-half fades played a part, no doubt, after the Cubs declined his $12M option to let him seek his own deal.

Re: 2016-2017 MLB Off Season Thread

McCutchen looked terrible in centerfield last season. It was a joke they kept trotting him out there with one of the best athletes in baseball stuck in leftfield.

I expect McCutchen to bounce back at the plate but his days as a premium defender/baserunner are over. If he has a couple of good months, expect him to get traded before the deadline.

I hope he bounces back because he was on a Hall of Fame path before 2016.

Re: 2016-2017 MLB Off Season Thread

Warning: This will be the most ridiculous thing you'll read today.

http://sports.yahoo.com/news/mlb-pla...224914115.html

Quote:
Major League Baseball plans on testing a rule change in the lowest levels of the minor leagues this season that automatically would place a runner on second base at the start of extra innings, a distinct break from the game’s orthodoxy that nonetheless has wide-ranging support at the highest levels of the league, sources familiar with the plan told Yahoo Sports.

A derivation of the rule has been used in international baseball for nearly a decade and will be implemented in the World Baseball Classic this spring. MLB’s desire to test it in the rookie-level Gulf Coast League and Arizona League this summer is part of an effort to understand its wide in-game consequences – and whether its implementation at higher levels, and even the major leagues, may be warranted.

“Let’s see what it looks like,” said Joe Torre, the longtime major league manager who’s now MLB’s Chief Baseball Officer and a strong proponent of the testing. “It’s not fun to watch when you go through your whole pitching staff and wind up bringing a utility infielder in to pitch. As much as it’s nice to talk about being at an 18-inning game, it takes time.

“It’s baseball. I’m just trying to get back to that, where this is the game that people come to watch. It doesn’t mean you’re going to score. You’re just trying to play baseball.”

While the specifics of the rule are not final, the current plan is to start with a runner on second base in the 10th and every inning thereafter. As baseball grapples with ways to increase action in a game with a record-low rate of balls in play, changing its extra-innings rules emerged as a solution with multiple potential benefits.

Starting the inning on Second base? Let's call that the Trump rule.

What a joke.

If they want too speed up the game:
a.) make the batter stay in the fucking batter's box(watch games from 30 or 40 yrs ago,the batter hardly ever stepped out).

b.) pitch clock(this won't give pitchers like Gallardo 45 seconds of time to rub up the baseball after every pitch that is thrown in the dirt).

c.) make relief pitchers pitch longer(except for the ninth inning ,reliefers should face a max of three hitters).

d.) cutback on instant replay. I thought teams only had so many challenges but that rule seemed to be thrown out the window

e.)make the pitchers throw during an intentional walk(this isn't going too speed up the game because it rarely happens).

Re: 2016-2017 MLB Off Season Thread

This will be the final rule on how to start extra innings:

-Runner on second in the 10th
-Runners on second and third in the 11th
-Bases loaded in the 12th
-Based loaded with a 3-0 count in the 13th
-Home team gets a bonus run in the 14th, and the visitors have to score to not lose

Re: 2016-2017 MLB Off Season Thread

Definitely not in favor of having a runner start the inning on second. That's what is done for my son's softball team, and I even hate that. I want intentional walks to be pitched as well. There should be no free bases for anything. With intentional walks, there's always the chance of a wild pitch, a passed ball, a stolen base (even home), etc. I'm in favor of speeding up games, but not with those suggestions.

I fundamentally disagree with Joe Torre. It is highly entertaining when a utility infielder has to come in to pitch in long extra inning games.

Re: 2016-2017 MLB Off Season Thread

What pitcher gets charged with the run should it score?

What if a pitcher is going for an ERA title or consecutive innings record w/o a run scored and get's charged with this bogus run?

Extra inning games have always been a part of MLB. It's the length of the nine inning games that's the problem.

DVR the game if you don't like Red Sox/Yankee 4 hour games.

I would rather see 7 inning games (or nine inning tie games)than automatically award second base in extra innings.

Why not suspend games after 12 innings and pick them up at a later date.

Re: 2016-2017 MLB Off Season Thread

Torre's comments were so stupid. The long extra games are not the problem. It's pace of play and 4+ hour 9-inning games. It was like something coming out of the WH -- there was only 1 game last year where a non-pitcher pitched and that was the 19 inning CLE-TOR game on July 1 and that was fun to see them pitch - one of the few non-Oriole games I watched a lot of.

Re: 2016-2017 MLB Off Season Thread

Way back when either the AL or NL had a 1am curfew.

They could play to a 4 hour time limit in MLB (and suspend the game)) unless it's the last game between the teams(or the suspended game wouldn't be able too be completed).

Do they still play tie games(or play to curfew) in Japan's Major League's?

Re: 2016-2017 MLB Off Season Thread

The runner on second is just stupid beyond belief, if they do that there should be a rule that the first and 3rd baseman are required to have a beer sitting just outside the foul line and down one every AB.

The length of the games and extra innings games are not a problem. The pacing of the games is.

You can have a 4 hour 9 inning game be exciting if there are a bunch of lead changes and important ABs and you can have a boring as hell 2 1/2 hour game where one team puts up 6 in the first and nothing happens afterwards. Part of that is just inherent to the game.

The only things I would like to see changed is in game pacing, limit trips to the mound by the catcher/the whole infield (maybe those rules change in the 7th inning-on. It seems they should have the signs arranged for what happens when a runner gets on second before the game .. if not, screw 'em
... put some reasonable limits on stepping out of the box and some reasonable time between pitches, especially with the bases empty.

.. on a second visit to the mound, make them call for the pitching change before the manager crosses the foul line.

Calling the actual strike zone would help a bit too.

I think there are small tweaks that could be made to speed up the pace a bit, but really they should be geared towards making the game flow better and the game will decide how long it will take to finish.

If anything, I think replay has been a net plus ... you avoid the manager arguing with the umpire with zero chance of the call being overturned. Admittedly, I miss the Earl Weavers of the world kicking dirt all over the plate, but I'm not sure replay adds time to the game versus the arguments.

They should take a serious look at automated balls and strikes.

RIP Mike Ilitch. I always respected his efforts to make the Tigers a winner.

Re: 2016-2017 MLB Off Season Thread

Old news now, but Dat Dude to the Braves. Reds are eating most of his 2017 salary and getting a couple of unimpressive pitchers in return. Looks like it will be even easier to get tickets on the cheap this coming season than it was last year.
