2014 ATP/WTA Tennis Thread

So, the year starts out the same way 2013 played out: Serena dominated her "rivals" (beat Sharapova and Azarenka in straights to win Brisbane), Nadal wins his 1st tournament, and Federer loses to Hewitt in his final.

Federer again losing to Hewitt, a guy he used to be able to beat with his eyes closed, tells me nothing has changed and whatever tweaks he made to his game in the offseason aren't going to help him bounce back from a bad 2013. Another sad year for Fed fans appears to be ahead.

I'll wait for the "real" tournaments to start before passing judgement. These pre AO gigs are essentially like pre-season. Heck, Nadal lost sets to qualifiers.

I remember the last few years with McEnroe. A once-great player that simply looked slower against everyone, the usual bag of tricks weren't working very well. I wonder when Fed decides he has had enough being a mortal player.

Re: 2014 ATP/WTA Tennis Thread

Australian Open draw:

Nadal, Del Potro, Murray, Federer, all in the same half. Probable Nadal-Del Potro and Murray-Federer/Tsonga quarters. Nadal also gets Tomic in the 1st round, possibly Monfils in the 3rd, and Hewitt/Nishikori in the 4th. Ouch...

Djokovic likely gets Wawrinka in the quarters and Berdych/Ferrer in the semi.

Re: 2014 ATP/WTA Tennis Thread

Can't wait for this to start. I requested the 23rd/24th off from work so I can watch the semis live. I struggled staying up all night last year; we'll see how I do this year...

Re: 2014 ATP/WTA Tennis Thread

Oh Rafa...

Quote:
Nadal is upset by faster courts in Melbourne, Murray, Federer disagree

The world no.1 doesn’t agree about the faster conditions at the first slam of the year.

Rafael Nadal is not a happy man at the moment.

The Spaniard sounds rather upset by the fact that the courts seems much faster than the last few years. But Andy Murray and Roger Federer disagree with that

Rafa: Faster than I ever played in Australia

The Spaniard commented that there are “Completely different conditions than what I remember of this tournament. Faster conditions than I ever played here in Australia.

"I really don't understand very well why they change because the last couple of years, Australian Open had amazing matching, long ones, good ones for the crowd. I don't know why the people who decide to make the conditions that fast.”

Murray: Conditions are the same as last year

Andy Murray disagrees with Rafa saying that the conditions are "same as last year, exactly the same. Same balls. Same speed."

Federer: Courts are not lightning fast

Roger also disagrees with Rafa to say "I think even these conditions here, we'll see long rallies after all. We're not talking about a lightning speed court. In Brisbane it was fast, but it wasn't lightning either. This is like medium, if that. I don't know what the big problem is."
Murray is wrong, they changed the balls, but there's no way these qualify as fast hard courts. Rafa didn't play last year but while players have mentioned that the outer courts played faster, the "show" courts did not.

Re: 2014 ATP/WTA Tennis Thread

Hewitt, at 32, played his butt off for 4+ hours and nearly pulled it off in 5 after being down 2 sets. Then Tomic comes on, plays a set against Nadal and decides he's had enough. No wonder he got booed of the court.

And you know it's bloody hot when even ball boys/girls collapse and have to helped off the courts. There were two in the Raonic match alone.

I'm amazed that Hewitt continues to plug away, years after his reign at the top. He must love to play tennis.

Yup, not to mention that he's had 6 or 7 different surgeries during his career.

Great win by Dimitrov against Raonic. I've been waiting for this guy to breakthrough for years now and it looks like its happening. He looked great. Very consistent and clutch when it mattered. Baby Fed finally living up to his potential.

Li Na tends to do well in the Aussie Open. Is this her year to finally win it? I hope so.

Ivanovic played fantastic against Serena. I saw the last two sets and I was like "what the heck am I watching???" Talk about being in a zone. She did to Serena's 2nd serve what Serena usually does to her opponents, cracking winners all over the place.

Na Li (or is it Li Na...I never know which way is correct) should make it out of that section.

I haven't watched much of this Slam (damn time difference!), but who the hell are Stephane Robert and Roberto Bautista Agut and why are they in the 4th round? Those guys couldn't in their wildest dreams have been in this position.

This Nishikori/Nadal match could be a good one.

Yeah, I'm watching Nadal / Nishikori too. Wondering if that break to get new shoes will be the turning point though. Nishikori looked good until then.

Re: 2014 ATP/WTA Tennis Thread

It's got to be so disheartening for opponents when they play Nadal...I can think of dozens of occasions where a guy is putting forth a great effort, playing really well but in the end Nadal wins the match because he always wins those few crucial points every set that matter. Nadal always steps it up when he's facing break points or when he has a chance to break serve.

Ivanovic has these crazy streaks in some matches where her forehand is unstoppable, due to the odd angle she likes to hit them. Of course, she is just as likely to lose in the next round.
