And the Pittsburgh Pirates have given us a reason to be baseball fans again. Last year was not a fluke. Hopefully they can keep it up past July this time.

I believe I was the one who jinxed the Pirates in this thread last year by saying they would surely end the losing streak. I feel even safer saying it this year.

The Cubs have actually improved to the point where they'd lose "only" 100 games. While this makes me concerned about losing the top draft pick, I have been impressed with Rizzo so far. Clutch RBI, lots of XBH, and good defense.

But if they have to use Volstad after they trade Dempster, things will go downhill again. Funny how things can change. Volstad was great in ST and Travis Wood was terrible. Start the regular season, and it's been the reverse.

IIRC, didn't the Pirates' losing streak last year start after that horrible call at home plate cost them the game against Atlanta? Hopefully nothing like that happens this year. It's fun to see the Pirates in the mix again.

Twins just had back-to-back runners thrown out at home plate on two different plays.

I wonder what the over/under is on the Mariners getting no-hit again. Some guy took a perfect game against them into the seventh the other day, and Chris Tillman (another part of the Erik Bedard trade, but hasn't been able to get a foothold in the majors) just gave up two hits in 8.1. (He was sent to AA after the game to stay on schedule through the AS break, but someone joked that he was demoted for giving up two hits to the Mariners. )

And Mordred, I read that Smoak blog you mentioned--sad stuff, but true. I just don't know how long they can wait for him to become an above-average 1B.

Also, I heard Jesus Montero had one RBI in June , and he left the game last night after taking a ball off the face mask. I saw him sort of stagger around when he tried to stand straight. One of the beat reporters was saying he takes more balls off the noggin than any catcher he's seen and wondered if it's a technique issue.

Yep. That call was bullshit, unfortunately, it put them into a spiral that they did not recover from.

^theyre a year older now and have a vet guy on the team that in Burnett that can keep them from completely falling apart again. I think they're for real too, and I think they'll be right there at the end. Making a move for some offense is something they should do though.

Another quality start from Quintana, and just enough offense to win for the White Sox. And who hit the go-ahead home? That bald guy.

Did not expect a sweep of this series. Harrison looked good today.

There is a different feel to this team though. The one last year had guys pitching above their averages and they won a lot of low scoring games. This team--particularly in the last month--has been killing the baseball and resembles an AL team. The Pirates have scored 42% of their runs via the HR. That's good for 5th in MLB.

I think they need another outfielder as well as Jose Tabata has been awful. Thankfully, he got sent down the other day.

They might need another starter too as Bedard and Correia haven't been very good lately.

Jason Grilli has been lights out as the eight inning set up guy this year. My only complaint about Clint Hurdle is that he bunts far too much. That and he looks sunburnt half the time.

On the Mariners: I wouldn't be surprised if they overtook the Cubs (or Astros) as the worst team in MLB at the end of the year.

I think I read that the Pirates hadn't scored 11 runs in a game over a year-and-a-half stretch but did it three times in two weeks recently.

The Mariners are showing real regression. They still have talent on the farm, but they're looking at this team being as bad as last year's, and the guys they were figuring to be cornerstones--Montero, Smoak, Ackley--have all shown warts or taken steps backward. And that's all hitting talent, when their best prospects are pitchers.

Worst record will depend a lot on what happens tradewise, of course.

Darvish and Freese win the fan vote.... apparently the fans want to remind people one last time of why they should not be picking all stars. Some pretty solid ballot stuffing.

The NL now has four 3rd baseman on their squad.

Feel bad for Jake Peavy (who has an ERA nearly a run lower than Darvish) and Frieri who has an ERA of 0.75 and has been lights out in the bullpen.

How are they money wise? Do they have a lot of payroll wiggle after the year to acquire a good hitter via FA? Otherwise they might have to trade a pitching prospect to acquire a bat.

Well they did send down Noesi and his 2-11 record today.

If Votto misses the game due to injury, maybe they can replace him with another 3B

This ownership is never going to out and out open the checkbook, but they will support a decent payroll and they took some big items off the books last year like Milton Bradley. Chone Figgins is an albatross for another year and a half, and after the season they have to figure out what to do with Ichiro. The problem with FA is that people don't want to come here because they think Safeco is a stats graveyard (which is true this year, so people keep talking about moving in the fences). They were supposed to be a heavy player for Prince last year because it's easier hitting to RF than LF (so lefties or someone like Montero with opposite-field power), but things never seemed to get serious that I saw.

Speaking of Montero, they did go that route in trading Pineda for him. He's shown some flashes, but you're still talking about a rookie with a .600 OPS. Noesi was pretty easy to send down, but it gets harder when you're thinking about farming out Montero to learn to hit and catch, or Smoak or even Ackley.

Too many questions with not enough answers. I don't know if you can look at anyone on today's team and say they're solid to be there three years down the road--Kyle Seager maybe.

^ Montero is never going to catch (other than maybe occasionally backing up). When he was with the Yankees everyone was saying no way, he gets to sent to the Mariners and folks started to say "maybe?". I think he will hit better but he is really having trouble with right handed pitchers (and specifically sliders/curves) - that might just be an adjustment to major league quality stuff or it might mean he has a few holes in his swing that pitchers are exploiting.

While I know it would crush the fanbase, they need to deal King Felix for a young position player and a haul of position player prospects. I think the Pineda deal was a good idea... they have a bunch of young pitching in the minors and should continue to look at opportunities to flip it for hitting.

They also at some point have to more seriously consider moving the fences in, while money talks...do free agent hitters really want to go there and play half their games at Safeco? They probably will have to pay a premium over other clubs to win over a big name free agent

People did say "maybe..." but the club just drafted Zunino 3rd overall, and as a top college guy he shouldn't be that far away (as long as he doesn't turn out to be Jeff Clement, also a top college guy and third overall pick). With Smoak's troubles, noise has also started about moving Montero to 1B instead of DH.

Realistically it'd be really hard to pay Felix at a Sabathia level when they're ready to contend in (ideally) 2-3 years so I agree they will probably move him. If you're going to do that, though, you really need to get some proven talent--as you say, at least one non-prospect--or you're going to take another step backward. You can't always be looking to the future.

Offhand, the only top-hitting FAs I recall them getting either have local ties (Richie Sexson) or are way overpaid (Beltre). My guess is they do move in the fences since offense from both home and visitors is at historically bad levels.

Braves pull out a win against the toughest team in the NL, but the damn Phillies and Giants both blow 5-4 leads in the 9th.
