Pujols better step it up or he will lose whatever care his teammates or the fans still have for him. Should he even care what the hitting coach does or says as it seems like he didn't even listen to the coaches during the last part of his career in St. Louis.?!

8 shutouts in the first 35 games is pretty pathetic...can't say I blame the Angels for firing Hatcher.

Last night's Brett Lawrie incident. That third strike was not even close.

Apparently the pitch before it was an even worse call.

From a different angle it's obvious he threw the helmet to the right of the umpire but it bounced funny. Still he should and will miss some games.

Re: MLB Wednesday, May 16, 2012

Here's a better video in the Seattle Times blog:

http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/htm...uspension.html

Quote:
Brett Lawrie faces suspension, but ump's action was troubling as well

No question whatsoever that Brett Lawrie is headed toward a deserved suspension, and likely a lengthy one, for firing his helmet and hitting home-plate umpire Bill Miller in last night's Toronto-Tampa Bay game. Lawrie may not have intended to hit Miller, but he fired it in the general direction of the umpire, and MLB has no choice but to drop the hammer on him. Here's the video:

However, what really irks me after watching that video is what I can only conclude is a "putting a young player in his place" call by Miller that led to Lawrie's anger

The first mistake Lawrie -- brother of former UW softball star pitcher Danielle Lawrie -- had made was trotting to first on what he thought was ball four on the previous pitch (and it WAS ball four, as the video shows, but Miller made a delayed strike call after Lawrie had already started trotting to first). He walked slowly back to the plate in obvious disdain of the call, staring at the ump and displaying general "I got hosed" body language. In other words, he showed up the ump. On both ends -- by trotting to first before the call had been made, and then by making his displeasure quite visible.

So I can only conclude that Miller decided the next pitch, if it was anywhere near home plate, was going to be called a strike. Umpires have done that since time immemorial to send messages to headstrong youngsters who show them up. But that doesn't make it right. If I'm jumping to a wrong conclusion, I apologize to Miller, but I defy anyone to watch the strike-three pitch that enraged Lawrie and conclude it was anything but a message call to Lawrie.

The integrity of the game requires that umpires not be target of any sort of physical abuse, and Lawrie crossed that line (and so, most definitely, did the fan at the end of this video who hurled a beer at Miller) . He warrants whatever punishment comes his way.

But the integrity of the game also requires that pitches are called as accurately as possibly. If Miller decided instead it was time to punish an uppity near-rookie, then that crosses a line as well.

Both strike calls were horrible.

Unfortunately for Lawrie, that doesn't excuse the helmet slam.

I agree with the writer above. Lawrie deserves his suspension, even if it was because the helmet too an unfortunate bounce. But that ump should be punished too. If it were up to me, I'd at least suspend him without pay, maybe fire him depending on his history. You can't put yourself above the game.

I'm SO f'ing tired of umpires thinking they need to be seen and think we, as fans, give a shit about them. Just call a fair game --- balls and strikes and stay non-existent. Thank you.

Re: MLB Wednesday, May 16, 2012

Lawrie was wrong and should have been suspended 10 games, because you can't throw anything at an ump or refs in sports, even if its by accident.

In saying that, Baseball umpires have annoyed me since I started watching Baseball with their arrogance. They are the only ones in sports who sometime PROVOKE the manager/player when they disagree with them, and are the ones who lose their cool first. No other sport do you see the umps/refs act like that then in Baseball. The sad fact is I know Joe West by name when he umps because he is an arrogant asshole.

Darvish allows 1 run in 7.2 and earns his 6th win of the season. After eight starts he's basically established himself as Texas' number one starter, in spirit if not in name. He's leading the team in wins, Ks, ERA and 2nd in opponent batting average.

Getting Hatcher fired already paid off for Pujols.

Re: MLB Wednesday, May 16, 2012

That player deserves a suspension but the ump does too. That goes to integrity and he showed he has none.

Also I guess there was someone from Philly there as I saw someone throw a beer at the ump as he was walking off the field since we all know that only happens in Philly and by people from Philly.

Also the Phils finally get to .500, yay.
