Re: MLB Monday, April 30, 2012

One of the Dbacks stud pitching prospects (Patrick Corbin) was called up to start today. One of the guys from the Haren trade a few years ago. Of course the game isn't on TV for me today.

I saw this stat the other yesterday: The Angels staff has more blown saves (6) than Pujols does RBIs (4).

Re: MLB Monday, April 30, 2012

Joe Mather hits the Cubs' eighth HR of the year and their first for an OF

The offense is woeful, but I'm actually becoming a bit of a believer in Tony Campana, the 5'8" speedster who's had the "too bad you can't steal first base" knock on him. He's gotten a fair amount of time after being called up following the Byrd trade, and he seems to be involved in a lot of the scoring plays, stealing bases and generally disrupting things. He had five hits, five runs scored, and two SB in the three games against the Phillies.

@ the Marlins. 2 hits, a HBP, bases juiced and Infante GIDP to Corbin.

AJ Pollack just had a bunt single that didn't go more than 6 feet in front of the plate.

Wow, Dbacks just blasted 5 runs in the inning. Marlins are horrible.

Dbacks take 3 of 4 in Miami. Should've been 4 of 4 since they blew a lead late in the game Saturday. Still, starting 3-1 on the road is a good start.

Jeff Mathis also has two or three times as many homers as Pujols has.

It'd be nice if he hits a homer tomorrow night (my first game of the season) but we'll see.

At this point, I wonder if he'll fall below the Mendoza Line.

Watch him get his first day off of the year tomorrow.

This three game series with the Twinkees will be for the worst record in baseball. They play again next week in Minnesota.

Man, Yu Darvish has a lot of movement on his pitches. It's a lot of fun to watch him work. He currently has 5 Ks in the first seven outs.

Edit: 6Ks through 3 innings.

Re: MLB Monday, April 30, 2012

David Roberston has just been absurd in the bullpen.

Last year he had 100K's in 66 innings. This year he has 18K's in 11innings. Had a 1.08 ERA last year and has yet to give up a run this year. He doesn't throw real hard (93-94mph), but he apparently releases the ball a foot closer to home plate than the average pitcher so it gets to the plate at the same time as a ~95-96mph fastball.

Kuroda with another solid start 7 innings, 1 earned run... set up on an "Ibanez single" (botched flyball) in the OF.

Re: MLB Monday, April 30, 2012

More fun Pujols stats:

Quote:
Statistically, this is one of the most shocking power outages in baseball history. Since 1974, only five men began a season with 400 or more career home runs and then failed to homer in their first 80 at-bats. According to STATS LLC, they are: Willie McCovey (1974), Carl Yastrzemski (1981), Eddie Murray (1996), Ken Griffey Jr. (2010) and Pujols (2012).
Of that esteemed group, not one averaged more than 16 home runs per season for the remainder of their careers. Griffey, then 40, retired that year without hitting a homer. In a possible Pujols parallel, the ’74 season was McCovey’s first as a Padre after the Giants dealt him to San Diego. He went on to hit 108 home runs over the next seven seasons.

Roberston is like Mini Mo with that cutter he's got going. He's barely throwing other pitches at this point. Pretty impressive.

Re: MLB Monday, April 30, 2012

Umps blew 2 calls in the Rays-Mariners game tonight. Molina did not tag the runner at home plate and runner was called out anyway. Would have been the go ahead run in the 9th inning. Second blown call was BJ Upton had an infield single then made a turn for 2nd and stopped. They tagged him and he was not called out. Amazing. Not sure what game the umps are watching.

Re: MLB Monday, April 30, 2012

^ Saw the tag play on Ichiro, where the catcher "tagged" him with his elbow

If the umps could just learn how to get in the right damn position to make the call, it would fix a lot of the problems. The ump for some reason was behind the lefty batter's box directly behind the catcher and had no chance of seeing whether there was a tag or not (so he just assumed there was).

There was a near identical play with the Yankees-Tigers over the weekend but the ump was perpendicular to the play (behind the RH batters's box) and could see a runner slide under a tag and called it correctly.

A lot of these mis-calls are a result of the umpire just not being in the right position to make the call. If the ump is in the correct position on that play it's an easy call.

Braun with 3 home runs tonight for the Brewers. Especially impressive considering they came in San Diego.

Angels get a rare save. Pujols went 1 for 4 with a double and a long foul ball.

Allen Craig is back for the Cards tomorrow. Hopefully his knee holds up (he's only played a couple games in the field in his rehab assignment) but his bat is definitely ready (he was 3 for 4 with 2 HRs and 5 RBIs in his last AAA game tonight).
