Re: Tennis - The 2012 Aussie Open

Two excellent and very tense matches from the women. Disappointed Kim went out, but shocked and relieved Maria won her match.

I hope she can finish this off and get one more slam title. She could have coasted on the bazillion dollars she makes away from tennis, but she plays really hard and has a lot of heart.

And, no matter what anyone here says, is totally lickable.

The Final from Hell: The Shrieker vs The Screamer.

I'm debating pass or mute button.

Re: Tennis - The 2012 Aussie Open

I didn't watch the match, but reading the analysis it sounds like it was the same old same old for Federer against Nadal. Tons of errors, he can't consolidate breaks, backhand is the weak link -sigh-
How the hell does Fed beat Nadal at the year end finals every year but can't do it any other time?

Re: Tennis - The 2012 Aussie Open

His backhand actually held up pretty well, much like Djokovic, he used the down the line more, forcing Nadal to go cross court, and then using his forehand cross court to send Nadal wide and finishing points with his forehand. He was also more aggressive on return of serve, sending many flat bh returns deep which gave Nadal trouble. The main problem is inconsistency. He goes into these horrible funks where he shanks balls all over the place. His forehand let him down on numerous occasions (I think he had more fh errors than bh errors) and somewhat inexplicably, much like Berdych, he kept coming in on Nadal's forehand. Except for the later, the strategy was the correct one, it's the execution that fails him because of the inconsistency. Case in point, he played a horrible 3rd set tie break. 3-4 silly errors and he's down 1-6. Then he plays 4 brilliant points to take it to 5-6. Too late, Nadal wins the next point.

And the WTF is a fast low bouncing court which is perfect for Fed. Plus, by that time, Nadal is gased.

I guess we can blame the inconsistency to simply being older...he certainly didn't have stretches like this in his prime.

That was an incredible match between Djokovic and Murray. Almost 5 hours! Murray's almost there.

Will Djokovic have enough left in the tank for Nadal? I think so, he's proven his fitness level over the last year.
When Nadal had that epic match vs Verdasco in the semis a few years ago (also 5 hours+ long) I didn't think he'd have anything left, but he beat Roger in 5 sets a couple days later.

Re: Tennis - The 2012 Aussie Open

I hate the Australian Open, simply because I can't watch any matches live. That Djokovic/Murray Semifinal looks like it was a classic this morning, and all I'll get to see is highlights.

Before the internet/cell phone days I used to be able to avoid any sports results like this and just watch it at night when they replayed it, but there is just too much information out there that I can't avoid hearing the final results.

Re: Tennis - The 2012 Aussie Open

Yeah the scheduling sucks but what can you do. I'm starting to look like a zombie. I watched the first 2 sets and went to bed, and saw the end of the 4th and the 5th on TSN (rerun) this afternoon.

Murray is almost there indeed. Great match. Djokovic has 2 days off, so hopefully he will have recovered for the final. Although it's hard to tell with him, he always look like he's about to die on the court...

Re: Tennis - The 2012 Aussie Open

I think Djokovic has the same mental advantage over Nadal that Nadal has over Federer. Djokovic's game doesn't match up well with Nadal's. As soon as Djokovic starts smacking winners off Nadal's forehand he's going to think "here we go again" and will immediately be at a mental disadvantage. If he doesn't win the first set I think he's got no chance.

I think you mean the opposite.

But yeah, it's a matchup issue. Nadal can't break down Djokovic's backhand. And while he can beat all the other players with defense, grit, and his forehand, Djokovic can match him in these areas and is better in others. Nadal's serve, return of serve and backhand just are not good enough to beat Djokovic. And he will have the same matchup issues against Murray when Murray gets over his mental issues, which by the looks of it, is starting to happen.

My dyslexia is showing

I predict Djokovic wins Aussie and French, Federer beats Djokovic at Wimby (of course this depends on seeding) and Murray wins his first slam at the US Open

Re: Tennis - The 2012 Aussie Open

Just watched my recording.... man I really wanted Murray to pull this one out. Nice to see him tie it up in the 5th at 5-5, because I thought Djokovic would just serve it out. Really hope Murray wins his slam one day. (kind of like Phil Mickelson coming so close so many times before winning his first golf major).

I think it's a great era for men's tennis right now... the top 4 are so strong, with some great rivalries between Nadal / Federer, and Djokovic / Murray

Re: Tennis - The 2012 Aussie Open

The Djokovic / Murray match was one of the best I've ever seen. By the fifth set they both looked completely exhausted, but both men kept persevering, pushing themselves to the very last shot. It was a real nail-biter.

I've Got the Maria / Victoria match recording now, and I'll watch it "live" in a few hours. Here's hoping Maria is victorious over Victoria .

This has been, overall, the best Aussie Open I've seen in many years.

Re: Tennis - The 2012 Aussie Open

Maria wasn't great, but Victoria was nearly flawless. Honestly, I thought Clijsters would win the tournament and should have known by the way Azarenka played against Kim that Maria would stand no chance unless she choked.

PS-Pleasant surprise to see Hingis again. She has grown into a beautiful woman.

Too many unforced errors on Maria's part killed her game tonight. Martina Hingis almost looks like Giada de Laurentiis.

Yeah, Hingis looks really good now.

Maria didn't play her best match but I think most of her problems were caused by the weighty pressure of Azarenka's standing on her shoulders.

If you are able to absorb Sharapova's power and expose her movement, she's screwed because she has no plan or strategy aside from mindless ball bashing. Congrats to Azarenka.

Any non-tennis fans (like me) will find this phrase extremely funny.
