What Is The Most Important Position In Football?

This question was brought about from today's play. There are areas teams can overcome. And succeed to some degree. But we are wondering which area no one wins without having good consistency. It is understand that no team is successful without all areas performing at least adequately.

So the poll will offer up the positions and let you choose which one is the MOST important part of a football team.

I voted for QB. He runs the team. You don't need a great QB to win, as has been demonstrated plenty of times in recent history, but you do need one that doesn't turn the ball over and makes the plays when he needs to.

There isn't a single position in the O-line that's more important as the QB but as a unit, the O-Line is the most important unit on the field. They create the running lanes and they keep the QB on his feet. With adequate time in the pocket, any pro QB can make a career for himself.

Well then it sounds like you might have voted for O-Line. Not that there is anything wrong with voting for QB.

I think QB is a no brainer. If you can't have someone to properly handle the ball how do you expect to get anything moving?

I guess it's semantics but O-Line isn't a position, it's a unit. You can have 4 good guys and one weaker player and as a whole the line can still be good. Which is why one O-Line position (guard, tackle, center) isn't as important as your QB because you need one guy that can do that job. But without the strong O-Line unit, even the most talented QB can look like a chump.

This really isn't true though. Of the last twenty Super Bowl winners only three of the QBs were not considered elite. Probably another five or six of the losing Super Bowl teams did not have an elite QB. There will of course always be anomalies, but especially with the rule changes of the past years making the passing game of utmost importance, a top level QB is essential to consistently win.

QB. Look at most Superbowl Champions, they have a franchise QB. The only ones that don't win without a franchise QB have a dominating defense (2000 Ravens, 1985 Bears.)

I don't think you need a 'franchise' QB to win a Super Bowl, but unless you are something like the aforementioned Bears or Ravens teams, your QB probably needs to be playing at a reasonably high level (in that season): see Rypien '91, B. Johnson '02, Simms '86, Theismann '82, etc.

I don't know which 3 you would say weren't elite. In the past 10 years, Eli Manning, Ben Roethlisberger, Trent Dilfer and Brad Johnson have won Superbowls and I wouldn't consider any of them "elite". Maybe our definitions of the term are different but the guys above wouldn't have won if it weren't for strong defenses and strong running games. Those guys just knew how to keep the ball and control the clock. I wouldn't consider Tom Brady elite in his first SB run either.

The OP included "Coach" among the choices. I believe quality coaching is more important in the NFL than any one position, even QB.

I agree. The talent is so spread out, that coaching and game-planning is the biggest difference.

And that reason is because he protects the most $$$$$ (and important) position, which is QB.
