Can someone explain too me how Tampa has a MLB team? 23,000 for a Sunday night game against Boston. If I were MLB-I would move them to New Jersey after building a 40,000 seat new stadium. I'm sure they would attract more than flies. Another joke is giving the Florida Marlins a new stadium. Fan interest in Southern Florida is at an all-time low.

The Florida-experiment by Selig was a disaster. I still can't believe the Marlins got funding for a new stadium, as they will sell-out for one season, and then go back to 20,000 per game.

Also the whole business of the Pirates making a 20 million dollar profit pisses me off too. The Pirates are getting alot of money from the revenue sharing teams that go over the luxury tax (mainly the Yanks & Sox), and for them to keep selling off players and not trying to win, something has to be done. Maybe Selig needs to threaten them with Contraction the way he did with Minnesota a few years back as this team has been totally irrelevant since 1992.

Part of me is wondering if the Manny deal would have been dropped if Minnesota had won yesterday. I guess I can hope the whole thing throws the Sox into a downward spiral.

The only way these teams would stop salary dumping would be to have rules where you would have to replace the salary dumped player with another player of equal value. The Orioles just had their first winning August since 1997, Unbelievable.

It's quite embarrassing when it's on national TV isn't it? You should see a Mon-Wed night game. If it's not the Yanks or Boston, there are maybe 12-15,000 there and this is a 1st place team, tied for the best record in baseball. Some of it has to do with the stadium being a dump, but the fans are just not interested in baseball down here. I thought they were diehard football here, but given the fact that the Bucs are going to have most of their games blacked out this year, I would have to conclude that they are fair weather fans at best and certainly not baseball fans.

The only time I go to games currently is if I feel like splurging for tickets in the club section. At least those are shaded and air conditioned, and you have the air conditioned concourse.

I don't necessarily think that the bold statement is true. Many, many fans in FL love baseball, but have too many options (whether it's spring training or low level minors). Why pay inflated prices to see an MLB game in a terrible stadium when you can pay a lot less to go see a game in a nicer, smaller venue. Also, FL baseball still has issues with divided allegiances given the number of teams having ST complexes in the area and the whole retirement community bringing in their fandom biases from home.

All that said, I think FL baseball can be successful with quality venues AND quality teams. The Marlin's experience over the next couple of years will be very telling.

I live in Orlando and go to Tampa for various sporting events several times a year.

It's just a lousy sports city. Sure, there are some knowledgeable fans, but as a whole it's the least educated, most obnoxious group of people I've ever sat near at sporting events, and that includes Rays games, Bucs games, and Lightning as well. And I grew up going to sporting events in the northeast, so I've seen some assholes in my day.

And even when they've been winning the last couple years, they have no following. I never see Rays jerseys or hats here, and we're 60 miles away.

Baseball shouldn't be there. Move the Rays to a city like Portland, Las Vegas, or an area like Northern New Jersey, and they'd draw far more fans.

I live 10 minutes from the Phillies AAA affiliate. I love going. But there is absolutely no comparison to going to a major league game to see a good team play.

I have to agree with CRM there. I DO love going to minor league ball down here, BUT it's no comparison to MLB level play. And when I do go to games, there are maybe a couple of thousand at the game at most. Clearwater Phillies get a lot more than Dunedin Blue Jays or Tampa Yanks. The latter of the those teams getting about 500 a night, maybe. I don't think the presence of minor league ball is a significant factor in the lack of attendance. If people really want to to see MLB, they will go. They don't want to.

I do put some stock into the transplanted fan theory though. If you're a Mets/Phillies/Yanks/Boston transplant, why would you be interested in the Rays, especially with things like the MLB package on cable or satellite?

The Marlins are stealing tax payer money, and the worst part is that no one will go to their new stadium!

Yeah, I would put stock into this as well. I went to a Devil Rays game back in '05, before they were any good, and it was crazy to see how bad of a situation that team was in. Bad team, bad stadium, bad location; it's really a no-brainer as to why they still are not big attractions.

I do think that if they actually won a World Series, they'd get a big boost in attendance for a good amount of time. But they really should have a stadium that isn't on the outskirts. I remember going a bit past the turn when you get off the freeway and it looked like something out of the 1950's.
