Re: MLB Sunday August 15, 2010
I continue to be impressed by Cincinnati, despite their poor showing last week against St. Louis, One would think they would have been slightly demoralized, but instead they've responded with back-to-back victories including one against the Marlins' best pitcher.

Atlanta has 8 runs so far. That's like a week's worth for them.

Nice job by Kevin Slowey, strikes out the side in the 5th after an error put a runner on second to start the inning.

Re: MLB Sunday August 15, 2010
Kyle Lohse is going to be the one contract the Cards regret having on their books for the next couple of years. The Cubs knocked him all over Busch Stadium this afternoon. Oh well, 1st place was fun while it lasted.
![]() The only positive note thus far is Pujols hitting a first inning home run. That's 10 straight 30+ HR seasons to begin his career. He's 4 away from 400 for his career. |

Re: MLB Sunday August 15, 2010
Yankees facing a pitcher for the first time, and once again they make him look Cy Young. Always a good approach when you never faced a guy before to swing early in counts and not take pitches to see what they have. And in the 7th inning, they make Brian Bullington throw 7 pitches... good to see them stick with their approach as it's been so successful thus far. At 81 pitches through 7innings, he may only be able to go 10 innings if the Yankees somehow tie this up - which doesn't seem likely as they have more errors than hits.
It's amazing how the Yankees tend to get up for big pitchers and try to grind out AB's and work counts, yet against a guy they never see before they'll typically just swing at the first pitch that's remotely close as if they expect to just hammer the guy and don't feel the need to get a good pitch or get in a good count. |

Oakland being no hit thru 7 innings by Kevin Slowey?
![]() EDIT: And he's apparently being pulled after 7 innings and 106 pitches. Last edited by wirefan; 08-15-10 at 03:13 PM. |

Won't deny anything you're saying, but will have to add that it'd be neat to see Bullington get his first major league win if he can finish it off. He's an Indiana guy (born and schooled there) and was the #1 overall draft pick in 2002. When the Pirates drafted him, there must have been visions of him throwing a major league shutout. Just not for another team 8 years later. Edit: Looks like Soria coming in for the 9th inning save. Last edited by cardsfan111; 08-15-10 at 03:14 PM. |

Re: MLB Sunday August 15, 2010
Thanks White Sox bullpen.
![]() Nice win for the Twins again, Thome with a beautiful 3 run shot on a 2 out, 3-0 count with the bases loaded. |

Re: MLB Sunday August 15, 2010
Case in point: trailing 9-2, Cards get a HR and load the bases to start the bottom of the 9th. RP comes in and gets a K on a full count then walks in a Ron on four pitches. 9-4, bases still loaded, and a new picher coming in.

Padres take an important series from the Giants today 8 - 2. Lincecum got roughed up.

Re: MLB Sunday August 15, 2010
I had the misfortune of being at the White Sox game today. So Garcia certainly seems on his way down in effectiveness and now Putz is shaky with Jenks out.
So now we go back to hoping the Twins lose, since the best we can do this coming week is tie for the lead (like that's going to happen). It was a nice June and July I guess. |

I also wouldn't be asking Jonathan Sanchez for lotto numbers or which horse to round out a trifecta at Golden Gate Fields. Perhaps when he said the Giants win 3 from the Padres he was talking about the entire season. |

Zito has been looking like the better pitcher lately. Lincecum is still a good pitcher, but looking a lot less like "The Freak" It's frustrating being a Giants fan. |

Another positive note was the first major league home run from Steven Hill, the catcher called up from AA when Jason LaRue got hurt in the brawl last week. He hit it in the 9th, but then grounded out to end the game when another home run could have won it...the bum. ![]() |

Must give props to the Reds the last three days. Wow. Beat Josh Johnson solidly. Cards, tough time again, though they show'd some fight to come back tonight, but just short. This is a fun division fight to watch down the stretch.
Really looking forward to how the Reds do out west. |

Re: MLB Sunday August 15, 2010
Interesting article from ESPN's Outside the Lines who kept track of all close plays in MLB over a time period and determined that umpires missed 20% of those calls.
Link Lots of quotes from various Hall of Famers on their thoughts. Some good insight as long as you ignore this "gem" from former ump Doug Harvey: Quote:
No wonder Harvey earned the nickname "God" while he was on the field. Apparently he thinks folks showed up to watch him or something. |
