Re: MLB Saturday August 7, 2010

I continue to be amazed at how tight the races are in the NL. All 3 division leaders up by a game or less and the Wild Card race is just as close. Of course, beyond those 6 teams in the thick of it, the rest of the league has been mediocre at best. Still it should be an exciting month or two ahead!

That Daniel Hudson guy we got in the Edwin Jackson trade is turning out to be a hell of a pitcher.

I didn't mention the AL simply because I just can't see Boston hanging with NY or TB. Of course, they've proven everyone one wrong so far. And with the records NY & TB have, whoever doesn't win the division is comfortably in front for the Wild Card at the moment.

Sure 5 of the 6 division races are still up for grabs. But in the NL, there's 6 teams battling for the 4 playoff spots and every one of clubs is just a loss or two from being on the outside looking in.

He's been officially scratched from today's lineup. The way the article made it seem he was in terrible pain... hopefully just a bad bruise and nothing season threatening.

Re: MLB Saturday August 7, 2010

Nice big league debut for Jays catcher J.P. Arencibia. Hit a HR on the first pitch he saw and is now 4 for 4 with two homers,a single and a double.

edit-Out in his 5th at bat but Jays up 17-7 on the Rays.

Apparently it's mostly Joe Bucks fault.

X-Rays were negative.

i like how Berkman is being blamed for ARod's injuries. Here's a thought, ARod, don't stand in the field when people are taking BP!

He does it every game, as do a lot of other players. Obviously Berkman isn't to blame, I said it in jest. As the story goes Joe Buck was standing by the dugout and tried to get Arods attention, Arod looked as Berkman hit the ball right to Arod. It was the hardest hit ball Berkman has hit since joining the team.

That massive crowd at the Cardinals/Marlins game is making so much noise and is distracting. Why did they let so many people in the stadium?

Edit: I just realized that they were Jon Jay fans. There are more fans there for him than there are for the Marlins.

Does it really matter, because the AL East will have the wildcard spot, so barring any collapse, the Yanks/Rays are in the playoffs.

This is why I will never love the Wildcard, as this would be such a great divisional race between the Rays/Yanks down the stretch, because they each know that they don't HAVE to win the division to get in.

Home field advantage is a big enough deal to push for a division title.

And if it wasn't for the wild card then we wouldn't have a chance to potentially see the two best teams in baseball battle it out in the ALCS.

See I don't think Home field advantage is that big a deal in Baseball compared to the NBA and NFL where it is a huge advantage.

The wildcard didn't exist for 95 years in baseball, and this happened all the time. I remember 1993 when the Giants and Braves battled out one of the greatest division races as the Braves won 104 and the Giants won 103 that year. The Yanks/Red Sox 1978 Division race was the same as you had the infamous Bucky Dent Homerun in the 163rd game.

Thats what makes baseball different then any other sport is that you don't need a load of playoff rounds, because playing 162 usually determines the better team. At this point, Baseball should cut the season to about 145 games, so the damn World Series doesn't go into November!

Well I agree that HFA isn't as important in baseball as it is in the NFL or NBA but that doesn't mean it isn't important.

And true there have been some great division races at the end of the season but it's not like those have disappeared. You still have division races and now you have wild card races and this years NL wild card race is shaping up to be a classic with 3 teams involved. Not to mention you still have 4 close division races to keep track of (I'm excluding the AL East because two teams will likely come out of there anyway).

And just because they did without the wild card for 95 years doesn't mean it was better without. Not only are we getting division races down the stretch but we're also getting to see some classic LCS'... 2003 and 2004 ALCS comes to mind right away.

Of course it's all a matter of opinion so we'll probably have to agree to disagree here.

Quote:

To be fair, the World Series has only gone to November twice. The first time being after 9/11 when play was suspended for a week. Last year's went to November because the players insisted on prolonging spring training by a week because a bunch of them were coming back from the World Baseball Classic and wanted more time with their MLB team. If anything, we should move the WBC to November and play it in the DR or Puerto Rico. You'd be playing in front of fans that don't get to see MLB players too often so they'll be really into it and you'll get players trying harder because they're not as worried about the MLB season as they would be in February.

And they should cut out that awkward day off in the middle of the LCS. Which I think they're doing this year.

.
If they had the old 4 divisions, here would be the races:

NL East:
Atlanta -
Philadelphia 1 game back
St. Louis 1 game back

NL West:
Sandiego -
Cinncinati 1 game back
San Fran 2 games back

AL East:
Yanks -
Tampa Bay 1 game back

AL West:
Texas -
WhiteSox 2 games back
Minnesota 3 games back

You essentially have the same great divisional races even without the extra playoff spot in each league. Plus, now EVERY game between the Yanks/Rays means going to the playoffs or going home. Do you think Girardi would have rested A-Rod last Sunday if this were 1990 and there was no wildcard??? Of course not, he would do anything to win those games.

The Wildcard was simply invented to keep more teams 'in the hunt' to keep fan interest past July, but it is a mirage because teams who are on the bubble who think they have a chance, are really not going to win the Wildcard anyway.

Plus, the AL West would actually have a race now
