2009/10 UEFA Champions League Knock-Out Stages

Okay, I give up. Where is the previous thread on this topic?

Search yields nothing for me on "UEFA" or "Champions" in titles for this forum for the current season. But unless I go ahead and act like I'm starting this, nobody will bother to post a link to where the thread is. In the off-chance that the thread I'm referencing has NOT been started, please allow me to dive right in!

Bayern Munich stuns Man U with a stoppage time goal to take the first leg of their Quarterfinal tie 2-1. I can't help but think about all the stoppage time advantages Man U has enjoyed in the EPL over the years - perhaps because this ref was Belgian was Munich given the time needed to tally the winner? Dunno, but it sure is fun to speculate!

Here's how we got here, starting with the Group Stage:

Inter scores in the 5th minute. 2-0 agg and 1-0 away goals, so CSKA needs 3 now. Not looking good for them.

Re: 2009/10 UEFA Champions League Knock-Out Stages

I'm thinking Barca wins today 2-1 at the Nou Camp. Ibrahimovic, Piquet, and Puyol are out for Barca, while Van Persie, Fabregas, Arshavin, and Gallas are out for the Arse.

^ Concur, since Fabregas' absence will be particularly noted by the Gunners.

Arsenal needs the win or at least 2 goals, so I expect they'll play uncharacteristically agressive, which should play into Barça's hands. Of course, if it does play into their hands, Arsenal should get a lot of handball yellows, so things might balance out.

Odiah (CSKA) redcarded at 48'. That should just about seal Inter going through. As unlikely it is that CSKA would tally 3 times in one half, it's gonna prove even harder to do it shorthanded. Looks like Inter will be hosting the Barcelona-Arsenal survivor in two weeks.

Goal Arsenal (18' Bentner)

Well well.....
Arsenal up on aggregate 3-2, and have chopped Barcelona's away goal advantage in half.

I'm pulling photos off of UEFA's Matchday website. They're posting them several minutes behind real-time, but at they come in I'll update posts (above) to attach the photos to them.

Wow. ToP is running about 80% Barça right now. Not at all what I was expecting from Wenger's gameplan. Shots are 5-2 Barça, fouls are 12-3 Arsenal... from a stats perspective, it's really lopsided.

Yep, Messi (36') to put Barça up 2-1. Looks like your score prediction just came true, but there's still 54' left to go. Maybe I'm blind to logic, but with Arsenal already having tallied once, I have to think that their next goal counts double, as it would nullify Barça's away goal advantage. Barça has to decide whether they will pack it in and aim to prevent that equalizer, or if they take the approach that the best defense is a strong offense.

If the Gunners do get a 2nd goal, then that makes a potential 3rd goal a killer. I would expect Barça to slow the game down now.

The shocking thing is that Arsenal are a team that usually dominate possession even against teams that are better than them. Barca are just so much more talented on the ball, back to front, than anyone in the world.

Soccernet Live Commentary:
Quote:
This is a stunning display of football from Messi. He has his hat-trick. Messi is put through after Abidal's header put it in his path and with Almunia coming out to stop him, Messi delicately and beautifully scoops it over him. A stunning finish from a stunning footballer.

Wenger should probably think to get Eboue warmed up. No point in playing back down 2.

That was the Lionel Messi show. The pint-sized Argentine had three chances and finished all three with aplomb. At half time at Camp Nou, it's Messi 3-1 Arsenal. See you in 15 minutes.
