How does Olympic skiing (slalom) work?

When I look at slalom courses I see dozens of extraneous gates, and there is no path painted on the snow to tell the athletes where to go.

1) How does the skier know which gates comprise the course?
2) What's the point of all the unused gates?
3) Why don't giant slalom and super-g have extra gates?

You go left of the red ones and right of the blues. For double gates, you only have to go outside of the inner-most one, but if you opt to go outside of them both you get a star. 10 stars and you get a power-up.

Re: How does Olympic skiing (slalom) work?

There's slalom, giant slalom, and super giant slalom (super-g). Slalom is the floppy sticks. The camera is using a long lens which compresses the field-of-view, making it look like a giant mess of sticks. You can go down however you like, like plinko. But if you go around a pole, you best go around the correct side.

Giant slalom is faster so you have to have larger turns and more space between the poles. Super-G is even more so.

Though I'm not sure I understand the difference between super-g and downhill. Both are fast and both have gates about which you must turn. Anyone care to explain?

Slalom - Giant Slalom - Super G - Downhill

<========= more gates, more turning

less gates, less turning ===========>

Re: How does Olympic skiing (slalom) work?

Super G is unique in that it is conducted over one run, like Downhill, but racers are not permitted to train the course at full speed before the race. As in Giant Slalom and Slalom, they are allowed only a one hour visual inspection of the course on the morning of the race. This distinction adds to the unpredictable nature of the event. Super G requires ski racing abilities that are different from the other three disciplines.

That makes no sense. All racers take the same line on the course. Still doesn't answer the question: what marks the course? it does indeed look like a field of sticks, most of which seem to have no function because the racers don't use them.

in slalom, it might look like they're just going around single poles, but they're really going between gates (which are made up of two poles), so those extra "sticks" are just the other side of the gates.
