If you can name me one team in MLB history that signed 3 top of the line Free Agents in one offseason, then I will take by my statement that only the Yankees have a HUGE advantage over the other 29 teams.

Now I will say the Cubs, RedSox, Angels have an advantage over about 15 small market teams, so they are part of the problem with baseball too.

Listen, no one is blaming the Yankees for doing what they did, because they are just playing by the stupid economic model that Selig and Fehr set up in the last few CBA's. But please don't insult anyones intelligence here and not admit that the Yankees literally bought this WS. You can enjoy the title and still admit they have a huge advantage.

In the NBA, NHL, and NFL, the Yankees would have not been able to go after all 3 free agents this year because of the cap.

In saying that, MLB needs to institute a Salary Cap, so the Yankees, Mets, and RedSox don't buy EVERY free agent every winter, and they need to institute a Salary Floor, so the Royals and Pirates don't SELL every good player they have.

But I guess we've been down this road before.......
1st back in the 80's or 90's the Cubs signed 3 free agents one of them was Danny Jackson and stopper reliever who was with the Astros I believe. I forgot the other player maybe George Bell.
2nd they have a tax now in baseball.
So the Yankees pay big money but also charge big money to go see their games. Which may explanin why no fans jumped on the field on Wed.
Too many cultured suits sitting around the field.

Re: Yankees vs. Phillies Official WS Thread (part II)

The only not-so-great thing about the Yankees' win this year is all those haters coming out of the woodwork right after the end of the game last night.

I do agree that the Yankees redeemed themselves by the end of the season after the debacles with the Alex Rodriguez PED revelations and the early season problems with too many "cheap" home runs beyond right center field at the new ball park.

In the end, what did in the Phillies was the inexplicable decisions about pitching changes by manager Charlie Manuel--like keeping Pedro Martinez just too long on the mound in Games 2 and 6. Watch for the Phillies to beef up their pitching staff--especially long and short relief--for next season.

I've enjoyed seeing Bobby Valentine back on Baseball Tonight. I always thought the guy was a jackass when he was a manager, but I grew to like him on BT before he went to Japan.

The streets are packed! I can barely move. I gave up and went to work instead. I have no chance of getting remotely close to Broadway.

Brett Gardner is a fantastic outfielder and looks to be a Brett Butler type player at the plate

I figure Melky in Left, Gardner in center, Swisher in right, with Damon or Nady roaming around, getting AB's at DH, and spelling the others.

Re: Yankees vs. Phillies Official WS Thread (part II)

BTW - Pitchers and Catchers begin to report on Feb 19th. That's 13 weeks from today.
http://www.springtrainingonline.com/...ting-dates.htm

With the World Series ending right before Veteran's Day, and training camps opening the week of Valentine's Day, that leaves us with only TWO non-baseball months... December and January. Hell, it's as bad as the NBA or NASCAR...

Agreed. The baseball season is getting way too long. It's tough to stay interested for that amount of time. They need to start the playoffs at the end of Sept.

I DVR'd the parade from the YES network and was watching some of it. Looked like a fun time.

The season is 162 games. Just like every other year. And Spring Training starts later next year than this year. "Only two months of non-baseball" is ridiculously misleading.

Actually, it's "intentionally" misleading. However...

baseball in November
no baseball in December
no baseball in January
baseball in February
....

Maybe some doubleheaders, and a best-of-5 NL/ALCS between the TWO division champions would do the trick.

Oh snap, I forgot, this is YOUR generation's baseball season, not mine.

Great pictures, Raven!

I like how Burnett keeps Molina with him, even during the parade.

I went over there on Sat. They were out of a lot of WS stuff. Bought 2 t-shirts for over $50 total. That was my limit. I really wanted a Yanks hat with the WS logo on it, but it was $45, which is ridiculous. I'll see if I can find it cheaper someplace else. You know, that was one thing I miss about the street vendors in NYC, you could get a WS shirt like that for 10 bucks.

I have my 2008 and 2009 Phillies World Series hats. (Regular fitted hat with logo on side.) They are $36 at Dicks - steep but I only wear them to games so they should last forever!

^That is crazy. Maybe because you went straight to Legends field them? I got 3 shirts and a hat for $100. Still expensive but not as bad as those prices.

Sports FanAttic in Citrus Park mall has the shirts for $25 and the hats for $30. I picked up one of the Inaugural Season patch hats at the giftshop for $18, down from $42. The prices there are absurd.
