Attempted eye gouge. I didn't see/hear the UGA player screaming in pain afterward. I presume an eye gouge would cause that type of pain. I didn't see him grab his eye. I didn't even hear the victim talk about his injury after the game.

Re: College Football - Week 9 - *SWAC edition*

My first post was a joke. ctyankee felt there was a big difference between an "eye gouge" and an "eye poke." I simply pointed out that if the victim's eye had been "gouged" then he probably would have shown some symptoms.

I'm having some fun with this situation. What else can I do? Nobody was hurt. Everyone in the world is slamming UF over this. It comes with the territory of being number 1. I'm okay with that. But, every football play is not played in a vacuum. Florida-Georgia is an emotional, physical game. I agree with Sorraffy who said that Spikes made the mistake of getting caught on camera.

no shit....i had only heard about it, but seeing it for the first time...

That was just plain vicious...that's closer to assault with intent to do great bodily harm than a personal foul. Just appalling. I'm sure Gator fans are on the "everyone does it...they just don't get caught" bandwagon right now.

Gator fans think Spikes was justified because someone on UGA pulled his hair.

If someone doesn't want their hair pulled, don't wear long hair.

Anyone think Oregon vs Florida would be a good game?

Spring ball at ND should be interesting.

QB Dayne Crist tore his ACL and could be out until right before camp starts next August. If Clausen goes pro, which is a virtual lock at this point, they won't have a healthy QB on scholarship for the spring.

Nonsense. Mike Golic discussed this on his talk radio show. He generally has a 'boys will be boys' attitude but not on this one. He said that anyone that says that it's the hidden part of the game is full of it. "Eye gouging" ... his words not just mine ... is not part of football and never has been. He called the half-game suspension a joke. Which it is.

As to your question as to "what else can you do" the answer is easy. Quit making excuses for your team. Call it like it is and don't be an apologist.

I'm going to allow the victim, Georgia's Washaun Ealey, to contribute to the discussion.

My "excuse" (singular) was that FL/GA is an emotional and physical game. Washaun, would you care to comment on that?
Ealey: "It was just a lot of emotion in the game. We were out there fighting. It was a big rivalry game. Everybody was just out there talking trash back and forth. ... We were just out there playing football and having fun."

Earlier, you called Spike's move an "eye gouge." I corrected you that it was not an eye gouge. Washaun, would you comment on this?
Ealey: "He really didn't gouge my eyes. He really didn't get a chance to get close to my eyes."

Maybe you and Golic are correct and this never happens. Just to be sure, I'm going to ask Washaun if similar incidents do occur.
Ealey: "I'm pretty sure it goes on back and forth. We probably do it and other teams do too. It's all football. We're just out there trying to have fun."

Lucky for me I also heard Golic's discussion this morning. Both of you claim a half-game suspension is a joke. Guess how many games Golic would have suspended him for? 0. That's right, he thinks running stadiums at 5am for 5 weeks straight should be punishment. What a disciplinarian. Of course, the other person talking with Golic during this discussion, Mike Greenberg, felt the 1/2 game suspension is more punishment than what Golic proposed. I wonder if Washaun has anything to say about the suspension?
Ealey: "That's their decision. He shouldn't, I think, get suspended at all. We were just out there playing football."

Great editing ... you left out the part of the blog where "Ealey said he had his eyes closed when Spikes stuck his hand in his helmet and he wasn't hurt."

Gee. Wonder why he had his eyes closed. Was he taking a nap? Apparently Ealey isn't the sharpest tool in the shed as he has no idea what the words "close to my eyes" mean. That or maybe he and Spikes are already sharing the same agent.

What does that have to do with whether or not his eye was gouged? It was either gouged or it wasn't. I don't think he needs his eye open to feel a gouge.

I said his eye was not gouged. I inferred his eye was not gouged because he wasn't in pain after the play. However, I did admit it was an attempted gouge. Some Gators fans won't even admit to that, but to me there was obviously an attempt. You disagreed with that.

You said it was an eye gouge. Now, Ealey himself has said that his eye was not gouged. Why do you think you are correct?

Ealey also said Spikes never got close to his eyes. That's obviously not the case so why should I believe anything Ealey has to say. He said that he's hanging around after a tackle with his *&%&^ eyes shut. If he isn't credible, that's on him.

Look, if you want to be right to be right. Have at it. But Ealey is a fail.

Because the term "close" is relative. Obviously he knows Spikes' fingers were inside the facemask, but how do you know how close they got to his eyes? You don't know.

Quote:

I think it is perfectly reasonable for a football player to close his eyes after being tackled and while still laying on the ground underneath a pile of players.

Quote:

Ealey is a fail? Because he admits to not feeling anything in his eye?

I think it is hilarious that you refuse to say it was an attempted eye gouge versus an actual eye gouge. After the play he gets up like nothing was wrong. He's not grabbing his eye or rolling in pain. After the game he mentions nothing about his eye being gouged (or even poked). Reporters who interviewed him with his helmet off did not notice a red, swollen eye. He then says his eye was not gouged. End of story.

I know, right?

I can't tell you how many times I've told women, "Hey, if you didn't want me grabbin' them titties, why'd you grow 'em so big?"

If a UF opponent took off his helmet, walked to the Florida sideline and swung his helmet as hard as he could at a defenseless member of the Gators, but missed, should he be punished?
