Re: The Official MMA Thread - Part V

I think it was all down to R1 and it's hard to argue either way. I had it for Cerrone, but can't dispute it at all.

Cerrone was talking way too much noise in the pre-fight package about Varner.

Re: The Official MMA Thread - Part V

I caught all of the fights this morning. Forgot WEC was on Saturday instead of the usual Sunday, not that I would have been home anyway.

Pretty damn good card. The sourest spot was that ref John Shorley is a moron.

Great main event. I had it for Cerrone too, rounds one, four, and five, even go so far as to say you could generously make that round five a 10-8.

Thing is, I'm not broken up that arguably the wrong man, Henderson, won. WEC has a contender problem in most of its weight divisions resulting in lots of default auto-rematches and occurrences of guys who have dull, few fight momentum being granted title shots. This way you get Henderson-Varner, which is an interesting style matchup, you still have buzz for Cerrone rematches versus the winner or loser, and meanwhile establish some other contenders too. It gives them some traction that they need.

Re: The Official MMA Thread - Part V

Sounds like CroCop isn't retiring.. Wonder if the UFC will let him fight again..

09/10/09 - CroCop: "I felt like hanging myself"

Mirko ‘CroCop’ Filipovic says he was so upset after losing to Junior Dos Santos at UFC 103 that he felt like hanging himself in his hotel room afterwards.

“I was very, very disturbed after the loss to Dos Santos. I was in such a state that I wished to hang myself in my hotel room so I would be gone," he said in an interview with Croatian site Nokaut this week. “Three losses in my last seven fights is nothing but a disaster to me. That’s a terrible score and I’m not happy about it"

Filipovic also revealed that he has been in touch with sports psychologists about getting help with his mindset. He freely admits that his problems in the UFC cage have been as much mental as physical.

"I already know some things that I did wrong both in the fight and in the preparation for the fight, but there are many questions that remain to be answered. I am seriously thinking about hiring a psychiatrist to help me out. I have already made some calls about it.“

The Croatian heavyweight says he does not have “the right kind of motivation any more” but is at a loss to explain why. But he is adamant that he is not fighting for the money, saying he is “financially secure” for life after making some wise investments.

“If someone offered me millions of dollars to quit my career right now I would not accept it,” he said. “[Fighting] is my life and I don’t know any other way to live."

Regarding his performance against Dos Santos, Filipovic said that he “screwed up” and was not looking to make excuses. But he said that jet lag may have played a part, and repeated something he said earlier this week, that he had to have an ice bath to wake his body up shortly before heading to the Octagon.

Immediately after the Dos Santos loss, Filipovic was distraught and was talking about retiring immediately. But in the cold light of day he reconsidered, and now says he is determined to complete his UFC contract.

"I will make some changes in my training, because I wish to fight twice more in the UFC. I am a fighter, and I will find the motivation and strength I need," he said.

It's amazing how far they seemingly go out of their way to shaft Okami.

Just read that Kimbo might fight at 107 against Houston Alexander. They had to reach deeeeeep to find someone with ground skills just as poor as Kimbo.

Re: The Official MMA Thread - Part V

well its been confirmed
Quote:
With Mark Coleman forced to withdraw from his UFC 106 bout with Tito Ortiz due to an injury, speculation has been firmly focused on who would step up to face the returning “Huntington Beach Bad Boy.”

The new opponent has finally been revealed.

Hoping to avenge his decision loss to Ortiz at UFC 59, Forrest Griffin has stepped up to face Ortiz at the event. The co-main-event for a show headlined by UFC Heavyweight Champion Brock Lesnar vs. Shane Carwin, Ortiz-Griffin will help UFC 106 do monster numbers for the leading mixed martial arts promotion.

Griffin, who has been quiet following his devastating UFC 101 knockout loss to Anderson Silva, will get an opportunity to start the rebuilding process on a major stage.

Since their 2006 fight (which Ortiz won via a heavily-debated split decision), Griffin has defeated big names like Mauricio “Shogun” Rua and Quinton Jackson as part of his successful campaign to become the UFC Light Heavyweight Champion; he is currently, however, on a two-fight losing streak, with losses to Rashad Evans and Anderson Silva.

Ortiz, meanwhile, has been rather quiet–with losses to Chuck Liddell and Lyoto Machida and a draw against Rashad Evans, his only wins since the Griffin fight have come against Ken Shamrock.

Another loss for Rampage! Good.

Rashad is correct, it sucks the way Rampage and his trainers just abandon a guy in the ring after a loss. And what is with that thug talk about not wanting to go to jail? Is he such an animal that he can't control his temper and need to punch someone who disagrees with him?

Yahoo is reporting Dan Henderson is close to signing with Strikeforce. His UFC contract was done and they couldn't reach a new deal.

I imagine he'd get an instant shot at Mousasi if he fights at 205

Re: The Official MMA Thread - Part V

Wow.. Could be huge for Strikeforce.. Problem is, Hendo isn't a huge draw with the casual fans.. His best fight in the UFC was definitely his last one which does help though.. I can't believe the UFC won't beat the Strikeforce deal he may get though.. They grab up all the crappy washed up fighters that carry some name recognition (Baroni, Trigg, etc) but they will let someone let Hendo go?

Bad move for Hendo. I hope that this is just a negotiating ploy.
