What's odd is that Ortiz isn't on the medical suspension list. You would think with two herniated discs and/or a fractured skull, they might take a look at that. Griffin was suspended for 6 months with his previously fractured foot and Anthony Johnson was simply suspended for precautionary reasons.

Watching the Koscheck / Johnson fight again.. I really don't see Johnson hitting Koscheck in the eye anywhere when he took that knee.. Anyone think Kos was faking?

Joe Rogan's twitter feed says this is when Koscheck took the poke in the eye: http://media.photobucket.com/image/r...s77/1y1tw7.gif

Now we're guaranteed to see Tito/Forrest III. I enjoyed this fight but that's because I'm a Forrest fan. I just don't know if I really want to see a 3rd one. All in all it was a great card that I wasn't expecting much from. It seemed that every fight from the Spike Prelims and the PPV itself were solid. Great wins for Kendall Grove, Amir Saddolah, Ben Saunders and Australian George. I think it's time they give George a bigger name to fight. His Jiu Jitsu is great and he's not young so might as well give him his chance sooner than later. Little Nog looked fantastic. I think he'll have to take a few fights before getting a title shot but I always like seeing another good name get thrown in the mix. I wouldn't be surprised if he fought Forrest next. Assuming he wins I think they'll throw him in for a #1 contender fight. Josh Koscheck had a big win too. I would have liked to see Anthony Johnson win only because I think he'd be a very interesting fight for GSP. A good wrestler with a heavy hand might be the kind of guy that can give GSP a run for his money. As it stands, it looks like he'll need more training before he can attempt that... but he has time.

What happened to Silva/Akiyama? I know that was rumored at some point (thought it was nearly signed), but it now appears that's off. Boo!

Re: The Official MMA Thread - Part V
Bisping/Wand was supposed to be the main event at the UK that happened a few weeks ago but Wand's plastic surgery stopped it. Not surprised they went back to it.

Come on now, it was corrective surgery. ![]() I like the Bisping-Wand fight much better. The way Akiyama looked against Belcher, I think they need to give him another test the waters fight. |

I don't know why but for whatever reason I am really excited for this fight as well. I think it has to do with Bisping once again fighting a real threat. As much as I couldn't stand him before the Hendo fight, that has really went away for me as he is the one that actually asked for the fight against Wand right off the bat upon returning - ya gotta respect that and I personally think it shows that he is serious about trying to really make a mark. |

Silva/Belfort is off again and it may not happen until April now because of Anderson's elbow.
Couture/Coleman is probably the main event now ![]()

Re: The Official MMA Thread - Part V
Is there a legit UFC main event anyone is really looking forward to? If they can ever get that Big Nog/Cain fight together that should be pretty good, but holy shit the next few months looks unbelievably weak.

Re: The Official MMA Thread - Part V
Yeah it's a crappy schedule until the spring after Penn/Sanchez, this is what it looks like right now
TUF 10: Finale - Jon Jones vs Matt Hamill UFC 107: Penn vs Sanchez UFC 108: Evans vs Silva UFN: Gray Maynard vs Nick Diaz UFC 109: Coleman vs Couture UFC 110: Nog vs Cain (If Nog's ready) or Bisping vs Silva if he's not UFC 111: GSP vs Hardy April event: Silva vs Belfort May event: Machida vs Rua II If Nog can't go I imagine they'll try and stick Carwin/Cain in there somewhere for the interim belt.

Re: The Official MMA Thread - Part V
Penn/Sanchez went from a nice little fight to basically the best main event (and only title fight) of the winter. I still think Penn dominates Sanchez everywhere, but at least it should be entertaining. Jones/Hamill has some potential as a good fight night main event and depending on who the remaining TUF HWs are fighting (hopefully Nelson/Jones) maybe that show will be useful once in the damn season.
But I honestly thought Evans/Silva might have been the worst PPV main event in recent history... only to be eclipsed two weeks later with Silva's prolonged recovery, leading to a probable Coleman/Couture PPV Main Event. Ugh.

Penn Vs. Sanchez is good. And I am interested in Evans Vs. Silva. But besides that it looks like a rebuilding year for the UFC.

Re: The Official MMA Thread - Part V
I think this was inevitable, but I didnt see it falling like dominoes. A year ago whn the UFC announced how many more cards a year it had planned, it just seemed like way too many. To be fair, Strikeforce made similar, too lofty, "We're doing a bazillion cards a year" claims when they went wide- look at how well thats doing.
When you make your cards all about the main event and stack so many so close together, its kind of bound to fall apart, whereas if they space it out a bit and make it about mains and co-mains to sell a ppv (their norm practice), I think it is far easier to restructure when a big fight is impeded. Look at it this way: Pair any of these two upcoming main events Penn-Sanchez, GSP-Hardy, Evans-Silva, Coleman-Couture, Nog-Cain, or Bisping-Silva, and you've got a fine ppv. Really the only weak combo would be Evans-Silva and Coleman-Couture, but even then its better than the cards as currently planned. I realize there is a big problem with how they presell the venue and ppv slot, but still... foresight is your friend. Last edited by Slumbering Fist; 11-30-09 at 12:05 PM. |

They're stuck in the position where they need to backfill these injuries with other fights like Koscheck/Johnson. While that was a nice fight, both of those guys could have likely been better utilized in higher profile fights instead of a last minute substitution. It also leaves them with having to capitalize on the 'hot' contender like Hardy or Carwin instead of really setting up true #1 contenders or fights. This Mir/Kongo fight is the best example of a big name being wasted on a nothing fight. Mir could easily be in a much better co-main event than that, but he's stuck with Kongo because that's how the schedule worked out.
