Sports Talk (Reverse) Sheep 3 — The Final Round

Never played before? Here's some praise for the game:
Spoiler:

"These things are the most fun way to waste time at work since GemCraft." - maxfisher

"This is the most stirring display of gallantry and sportsmanship since Mountbatten gave India back to the Punjabs." - wishbone

"These have been really fun." - Tracer Bullet

"I would like to take this opportunity to thank The Bus for quite possibly the funniest commentary of any of the sheep games." - orangecrush18

    Rules

  • The object of the game is to out-think everyone by picking answers to questions that are the most common (Sheep) or least common (Reverse Sheep), but still correct.
  • Example Sheep question: "Name a baseball team that hails or hailed from New York City." A good answer would be the New York Yankees and a bad answer might be the Brooklyn Royal Giants.
  • Example Reverse Sheep question: "Name an Olympic sport". Baseball might be a bad answer, but judo might be a good answer. (Unless everyone is trying to go as obscure as possible).
  • Sheep scores are tallied as negative numbers. Reverse Sheep scores are tallied as positive numbers. The lowest score wins.
  • The answers to each question are tallied up. Wrong answers in Reverse Sheep are scored two points above the most common answer. This penalty is multiplied by the Lightning Round Multiplier. Wrong answers in Sheep are not penalized.
  • Certain rounds are considered Lightning Rounds (designated by a multiplier, such as ×2). In these rounds, scores are adjusted by the number on the multiplier. A wrong answer still gets a +4 penalty in a ×2 round and a +6 penalty in a ×3 round, and so on. In a sheep round, a wrong answer scores normally.
  • You may not cheat by using Google, Wikipedia, etc. Use only what's in your head, with the exception of questions followed by a √ Check.
  • Please send in your answers to me via PM. Place only one answer per line, without numbers or the question itself. Those who do not do this will be penalized 10 points right off the bat.
  • For your convenience, I've made an Excel file where you can prepare your answers. When finished, just select the column of answers and send that in as text via PM. Don't email me the Excel file, that would be silly. (Google version here).
  • Note: Unless specifically mentioned in the question, all sports teams include any of the current sports teams in the NFL, MLB, NBA, NHL, or MLS. If there is a question that encompasses past teams that existed (or have since moved) in those leagues, then old teams are valid.
  • Sheep questions are marked by an S:, Reverse Sheep questions are marked by an R:.
  • Unique Bonus: Reverse Sheep questions will generate additional bonus (negative) points if there are less than 6 people with unique answers according to the following:
    1 Unique is awarded -15
2 Uniques are awarded -10 each
3 Uniques are awarded -6 each
4 Uniques are awarded -3 each
5 Uniques are awarded -1 each
  • NEW! Equalizer Question(s) A few questions are Equalizer Questions. These are designed to make the mid- and late-game more competitive. These questions are marked by an E: in front of them. In these questions, all answers are grouped together as per usual, but the top 50% (rounded up) all have their answers count as Reverse Sheep questions, and the bottom 50% (rounded down) have their answers count as Sheep questions. Unique answer bonuses do not trigger during Equalizer questions.
    Spoiler:

Let's say there's six players, with their scores as such:
    Googlemj23 : -40
    PapaRobot : -28
    The Gus : -20
    orangefanta18 : -10
    freensty : 8
    FasonJ : 32

The question was "Name an American car maker" and everyone but FasonJ answered "Ford". (He answered "Chrysler"). The "Ford" answer would count as -5 points to orangefanta18 and freensty, and as +5 points to Googlemj3, PapaRobot and The Gus. FasonJ gets 0 points and remains in last.

    The Questions

  1. S: ×2 Aside from heavyweight, name a weight class used in combat sports.
  2. S: Name a current or former player for the Philadelphia 76ers.
  3. S: Aside from the NFL, name a professional football league, past or present, currently active or defunct, anywhere in the world.
  4. R: Name a state and/or track that held or will hold a NASCAR Sprint Cup Series event during the 2009 season. Be specific with city or track if you're naming a state that has multiple raceways (like California).
  5. S: ×2 Who's going to win the World Series this year? √ Standings at MLB.com
  6. S: Name one of the events in the modern decathlon.
  7. R: Name a team that participated in the 2006 or 2009 World Baseball Classic. Teams are usually national teams.
  8. E: ×2 Name someone who has won the Tour de France multiple times.
  9. S: If the NFL were to expand with a team outside of the US, what country would it expand to first?
  10. S: Name a WNBA player.
  11. R: ×2 Name a first overall NBA draft pick from 1979 onward who does not have the Rookie of the Year award.
  12. R: ×3 Name a men's or women's national team that has won a gold, silver, or bronze medal in the Volleyball World Championship. (Name the country).
  13. E: Name a position whose player has won the Super Bowl MVP award.
  14. R: ×3 As a measure of medals earned over population, name a currently-existing country that has been more succesful at the Olympics than the United States.
  15. R: ×3 Name a US state that does not house a stadium for any professional team (NBA, MLB, MLS, NHL, NFL).
  16. S: ×2 Name a current WNBA team.
  17. E: Name a city that hosts one of the five yearly races in the World Marathon Majors.
  18. R: ×4 Name an NHL team whose name or logo is an animal.
  19. S: Name a sport (or sport-like activity) that is often played while drunk (or drinking).
  20. R: ×5 Name a Summer or Winter Olympics team sport that had at least one non-demonstration event in the last Olympiad. The sport must be team-only, meaning it cannot have one-person-only events in the Olympics (this disqualifies most, possibly all, racing sports).

Once I hit the 3rd Round in Sheep I move on, so this is the final one. I will leave it open for as long as I can, but please send in your answers sooner (before Tuesday) rather than later. Under no circumstances will the game begin before Tuesday, July 14.

I am capping the number of players at 50.

I'm confused by the Equalizer. Is the goal to match or not?

If you think you are going to be in the top 50% by that question, your goal is to not match.

If you think you are going to be in the bottom 50%, your goal is to match.

The top half of the draw, so the top 25 positions at the time of the question, will not want to match since the question will be reverse sheep for them. The bottom half will want to match since for them it will be a sheep question.

No matter what, the top half will get hurt by these questions; they can only mitigate the damage by answering with a unique. The real catch is attempting to figure out where you will be at the time of that particular question.

In the recently completed book talk sheep, these questions, albeit with a much larger multiplier than what exists here, radically changed the game, allowing bottom dweller JasonF to come out with the victory.

Re: Sports Talk (Reverse) Sheep 3 — The Final Round

As far as the last question goes, let's say Kung Fu was a sport in the olympics. Tey give a team medal, but theres also individual medals as well. That would be an incorrect answer?

Question 15 has changed. Please note I am looking for:

Quote:
Name a US state that does not house a stadium for any professional team.
Thanks.

Correct. That would be an incorrect answer. Let's say lacrosse was an Olympic sport. That is a team sport that has no individual event. That would be a correct answer. (Except lacrosse is not played in the Olympics).

The very large multiplier in the last game (×4) was removed this game. There's still one, but it's early enough in the game that it shouldn't cause too much havoc.

Do note, however, that this game has more multipliers (in general) and less questions. My goal was to get rid of questions late in the game that would not markedly affect the results.

No professional team at all? So they can't have any minor league baseball teams, or womens football or whatever?

What do you mean by 'football' (soccer or real football) in #3 or is that part of the trick?

That one and the one about measure of population over medals have me a little confused.

Although the copious amounts of Bob Ross that I've watched this evening have helped to mellow me out about it.

Even if he means soccer too, it's a sheep question. It would be silly to answer with a trick one like that.

Yeah, but with this crowd....that's why I asked for clarification.

I assume he is dividing total medals earned over history by population today.

Basically, let's say the US wins the most medals in the olympics, but it has 300 million people. so that is x number of medals per capita. Let's say the country of Mordor won 8 medals, but only has a population of 100. That would make their ratio a lot higher than the US.

Edit: Is it in olympic history or just the last olympics?

Got it. However, that doesn't really do me any good.

So can you change it?

Re: Sports Talk (Reverse) Sheep 3 — The Final Round

It's over the time period of the modern Olympics. The US has 304 million people. We've won over 2514 medals. That means that for every 1,000,000, we've won 8.38 medals.

Let's take Colombia, for example. They've won 11 medals but have 44 million people. Their ratio is 0.24 medals per 1,000,000 people.

In past Rounds, we had a question about total medal count. A few smaller countries showed up on that list. In general, I would advise to consider countries that participate in the Summer and the Winter Olympic games, as we're comparing medal counts over both.
